  • Obtaining JY spring

Yesterday I needed two front springs for Matthew, to replace the super-short cut ones on him now. Went to the JY, found an appropriate Festy. Had both springs in my hands in ~10 minutes or less. Here's how:
    1. Remove banjo bolt from caliper, to get the brake line out of the way. 12mm
    2. Loosen (but do not completely remove!) the center nut holding the spring. This is just to lessen the tension for later. Makes step #7 easier. 17mm
    3. Loosen forward nut that holds top hat in, but do not remove. 14mm
    4. Remove the other, rearward nut that holds top hat in. 14mm
    5. Remove the two lower strut bolts, and separate strut from knuckle. 17mm
    6. Now push the strut forward of the knuckle, so the bottom of the strut is free-hanging.
    7. Standing in front of car for safety (i.e. away from wheel well), slowly remove top center 17mm nut. There will be a slightly alarming crash when the nut comes off.
    8. Strut will be free. Separate spring from strut.

It took longer to post this than to do it! These steps can be done in a different order too.

Nope, Speedway in IL off I-70.

I figured I didn't invent this method, but that lotsa people hadn't discovered it yet on their own.

I cant stress enough that doing this is DANGEROUS and all precautions should be made before relieving the center nut. (i.e. make sure there is something substantial between you and the missle you're about to release).

now having said that, this is a quick and effective way to relieve the struts of thier springs.

Agree, which is why I stressed standing in front of the car when releasing the final bit of tension on the center nut.
