MPG difference for a festiva 4spd vs 5sp

    MPG difference for a festiva 4spd vs 5sp

    Hey guys,

    I'm looking to get a festiva again! Have not had one for about 8 years or so. I wanted to get a 5spd for best fuel economy but I have been able to find an 88 with a 4spd that may just work.

    I drive 36 miles each way to work every day of which about 30 each way is interstate driving. How much difference will I be looking at in mpg to go with the 4spd vs the 5spd?

    Also, how much work would it be to change over to a 5spd later on? Do I need anything besides the transmission?

    I had an 88 4spd for a bit. Gave me 42mpg floggging it nearly constantly. I was 18 and worked 45 minutes from home.

      I got at least 45 mph with the 5 speed

        I just swaped from a 5 speed to a 4 speed.
        (5 went bad) and keeping the some driving habits and conditions.
        I lost 1-2 mpgs .
        The difference in 4-5 speed is about 400 rpm.
        More annoying than anything I keep trying to shift to 5th lol.

          Was there anything needed besides the trans for the swap?

              Drop your speed by 5 MPH and you will have little or no loss in MPGs.

                my 89 came with a 4 speed and it was great around town but od interstate rpm's were high and then I went to a 5 speed and it's a lot better on the interstate but the 4 speed was the best for in town use my 4 speed was the one geared low, as far as mpg's like been said 1-2 loss with 4 speed if you run over 55-60 but about the same if speed kept under 60mph

                  Thanks for the info guys. So I have found a 4 speed that I am going to check out... I guess now I should not rule it out as a possible purchase... I was thinking the 5sp would gain me more than stated.

                      I think that final drive was the same for both so the only difference would be in acceleration and choosing optimal rpm at less than highway speeds. Now if in fact 5 speeds featured overdrive and 4's didn't then mileage difference would be most noticeable only at highway speeds. 3 speed Autos definitely take a hit mileage-wise of about 10% compared to a 5 speed Manual; I have driven both for almost 10 years.
