  • Once I get some money and have time...

what would be a good motor for my Festiva to look for? Should I look out for another B3? What other engines can be swapped without a lot of hassle. I was looking at the B series engines from Mazda and it shows these:
B1, B3, B5, B5 DOHC, B6, B6-2E, B6T, B6D, B8, BP, BPT. The rest after BPT were for Mazdas within the last 4 years. What ones should I keep an eyre out for and which ones will actually be able to be swapped?

$2.99 for 85 octane gas. How much more economical is the B3 compared to others.

I'd go with the B6 because they are easy to swap in, and still get the same gas mileage, but provide the extra power needed sometimes.

What is your mechanical ability level? That will determine what type of swap to do. For a beginner the b6 is the easiest, then the b6t or BP. If you can do some fabricating and wiring then go with the b6t or BP.

Well I've only done two engine swaps before. With my dad helping me. So the B6 would be the one. I need to gain some experience.

I just did the B6 swap, and it was pretty easy to do. I'm still trying to iron out an electrical problem(I believe) but it was pretty straight forward. My B6 was out of a 92 Mazda 323 by the way. Good luck with what ever one you choose.

well i dont think youd be getting 50mpg highway as some have with the b3. but the extra power would be nice going up hills.

Yea it really sucks with the B3 going up hills. It can barely make it.

Yes, but that's why you have a 4 spd transmission!
                      Downshift, works like magic!
B3 is fine at higher rpm.
You might want to give some thought to a 5spd upgrade.

Go with B6... not too hard to find, essentially the same amount of work as putting in another B3 (the blocks are identical on the outside) and replacement parts are easy to locate... and pulling all the hills out there in Colorado you should still get the same mileage (maybe even better) because the B6 will not have to work nearly as hard as the B3 to get you to the top

you will be surpized on just how much powerful a b6 in a festiva is!, i just finished my swap, and if i punch the gas while rolling it just lights up the tires effortlessly,. to the point where there is zero traction and the front end dances left and right, heh
