  • Those that have done Carb to EFI.

This isn't for a Festiva, but for the Sprint. I've been researching for a few days, and I figured since a few of you have done Festiva carb - EFI swaps, wiring harnesses and all, that I might ask a few questions.

What I've got is a not-at-all-stock 1.0L Sprint. Run off of nothing but a carb. Most original wiring is gone, speedo wiring is gone, every single interior panel is gone, running on Festiva 12 inch steelies.. :p Oddly enough, I've never driven on 12s with a Festiva (random useless fact). I'm getting 39.5MPG no matter how I drive. I had as low as 37 once, but almost every single fill-up is to-the-nose 39.5MPG. The car weighs in at about 1350lbs (plus, it's already lowered, electric fuel pump [I remember it being fairly high-pressure], front air dam, ect, maybe add underbelly cover).

I'm thinking if I take a 3cyl 1.0 harness from a Metro (and everything else EFI, injectors, mani, ect), I should be able to run this little built 1.0 on EFI, possibly averaging into the 70's on MPG with how much engine and body work it's had.

So my question, would it be better to run stock Metro wiring (probably $200 minus scrap returns for everything if I can find a blown engine Metro), or MegaSquirt? And how difficult is MS to set up. Mostly what I find for MS is all about power, nothing about MPG. Is MS worth the effort? Heck, should I get a 96+ harness and have OBD2?

    Thanks for any help.

    -Joe

Plus, EFI opens the window to turbo.. but that's just an extra incentive.

      i think you are wrong...
Megasquirt is not all about power....it depends on how you tune it and what mechanical parts are you using for your car.
for example you can use a size of 40 for throttle ... instead of 70 or 90. this also goes for injector size, camshaft profile, spark timing, Air/Fuel Ratio and so on.....
      .
in my opinion Megasquirt is so much better....it's a little harder to tune but with a WideBand oxygen sensor attached to it, you can do anything from Saving fuel ... to installing a turbo or Nitrous Oxide or Even going for Dual Fuel.
      i vote for MegaSquirt

Didn't even think about dual fuel. Mark a tally on MS. If I went the whole gambit (read: expensive for a rusted-out car), got MS, wideband, everything.. do I then need custom injectors, or - since I'm running a 1.0 still - can I still stay with stock Metros, even with say a small turbo?

Have you tried tuning the carb? A 32/36 seems like a lot of carb for a 1.0

It came well-tuned, but the carb is just too dang big. I think the jets are like .80 or .90 (it's been a long time since I opened it up). The carb was put on it nearly 25 years ago and needs a complete rebuild.

I should note it starts to run lean about 7k RPM.
But yeah. It's probably still running rich.

Well if you're shooting for mpg you shouldn't be worried about what's going on at 7k :p

True, but not all tanks can be for MPG! I'd go mad.
