  • First Road Trip was Completed Saskatoon SK- Edmonton AB

Hello all , great trip we ( family had ) fresh oil change prior to going used zero oil ( 5W30 ) 212,000 KM. drove 60 ish mph. Filled at half way point Lloydminster AB & washroom & snack bring topped the festy up with premium gas. Drove to Edmonton ran around shopping & looking at vehicles on kijiji, no deals. Refuel premium again and did the math on the fuel used. 49.2 mpg ( Canadian gallon 4.546L ) WOW awsome. Lloyd again premium then drove 66 ish mph home had a family supper to be at. 12 yr son & mother swap seat at half way point rear seat was hard on the tail bone.Hmmm have to look into better seats for long road trips. Great time seen no festy on the trip dare it, trip planned for Tuesday south 120 miles one way to see a 1 ton truck (alone). Pulled on to a provincial weigh scale with family & full of fuel it was 2508 lbs or 1140 kgs, it fit with both axles on the scale.

    90 festiva 5 spd, 12 inch rims

Nice to hear of Canadian adventure stories. These cars are result of economy designs from the mid-80s and have entirely corroded/eroded/disappeared from e. Ontario except for a very few diehards that have managed to keep theirs alive or else don't drive them in the winter/salt. If you are serious about long term prospects (12 inch tires, for one, are soon to be gone (ie special order) and have always been 2nd-3rd rate anyway) then you'll you'll start looking at an Aspire/Rio brake-suspension swap entirely for tire/bearing/brake convenience/improvement and you'll begin to investigate upgrade heaters. Neither Kia/Mazda/Ford saw fit to design/engineer adequate heating systems into these cars. I gained the ownership of an 05 Toyota Echo 2 months ago and was entirely blown away (literally and figuratively) with how hot and how soon and how good the heater is in one of those cars compared to a Festy. Obviously it can be done.
The Echo (even though this (the car I have)) is a 3 door "stripper" and already an outdated vehicle) it has a standard rear window washer and wiper, power steering, tachometer, intermittent wipers, underseat tray, twin cam 1.5 motor with timing chain (not a belt!), is easy to service, goes like stink (think B6-swapped Festy) and gets better mileage than an MTX Festy, and rolls on 14 inch (15s are OEM upgrade) tires.
Have fun with this. At least on Festys there are very few hidden fasteners or decorative frills to scare away novices from thinking they can actually attempt to service their own car.
