  • Got my daughter a Festiva for the "manual" challenged.

I got a new addition to my Festiva family today. And I found it about 8 blocks down my street. A 92 GL auto, 110K, one owner with most options except defroster. Factory air works well and it still has original whiteface am/fm. Cleanest 22 year old car imaginable. Tail lights need to be drained and get gaskets and it needs a brake light in the rear but is otherwise ready to go. My one owner 92 L and this car were sold by the same dealership, same salesman (who is a friend of mine) 7 days apart in 92 so tonight is not the first time they've been on the same lot.

Both my kiddies learned stick on my festy...it was a must before the test...made them get it rolling in 1st clutch only...no gas...never burned a clutch and they learned the feel...when rpthey askec when do I shift... I replied..when you feel it.

Took one full day and they mastered it.

Yeah, she has asked me if she can try it. I'm going to take out in my 90 Nissan pickup and use the method you suggest-no gas, just clutch until you're moving. I heard the Car Talk guys mention this a while back and tried for myself and figured this is as good way to go.
I know what you're saying about "feeling" the shift point. I took the car on a shakedown run yesterday and I felt that at 55 that it was time for some 5th, lol. I am going to put my tach cluster in it soon because I want to see the rpm's it's doing at cruising speed, and I want her to have the "lights on warning".

Those poor autos turn a lot of RPMs on the highway, which is why they get about the same mileage in town as they do on the open road. At 75 mine ran around 4k. They need a 4th AND 5th, they are only 3 speed. I have a 4 speed auto out of an 89 Mazda 323 in my basement that is supposed to theoretically drop the cruising RPMs down to only 100-200 higher than a 5 speed. But its huge, and will require a bit of fab work to cram in there, and as of right now I don't even have a shell to work with.
                    No festiva for me ATM...

Yeah, I could tell by ear that it was wound up pretty good. But I did love driving it with that AC on. I just have to quit pushing the imaginary clutch in when rolling to a stop, lol.
