  • I HATE RUST! 2.... (the repair)

    Got a lot done today!
First, I installed Camber bolts on Red Car, then, went and had an alignment done. The alignment came out perfect! (I wont be wearing out front tires so fast now!)

Now I could get to Black Car, and fix the battery acid rust area...

    I started with this

    Get out the tools needed!

    Goin' at it

I removed all the metal that I determined was too thin to weld

    No wire wheels for me

    Sand Blasting it!

    Rust Be Gone!

I am doing this, as I write this. Still in process, so to speak. I thought i'd take a break, have a drink and post this thread!
I am going out to coat it with Zinc Weld Through Primer in a few minutes!

    The saga continues .....

I have an air compressor, and the blast gun in the pic, is the kind that has a bag attached to it, to hold the sand. That is to slow, I removed the bag and attached a hose to it, that I stick right in the blast media, which I use a plastic bowl to put the media in, and just stick the hose in the media. Faster that way and more media to work with.
Harbor Freight probably has the blast guns.

Cool! I'm assuming, but you can weld directly on the paint? Never knew they had something like that!

That is one first rate repair Dan.

Thanks! Yes, you can weld through the paint. It is made with high zinc solids. Zinc is a rust inhibitor, and helps the weld to be more rust resistant.
Plus it can be used as a regular rust resistant primer.
I have used it in the past on my Bronco. Cut most of the floor board out and welded in sheet metal panels.

I'll pretty much be doing this the same way. I'll post more pics of the progress. You wont know it was repaired without a really close inspection!

That's cool never used one that could be used and real primer.
All the ones I use have really bad adhesion properties and should be removed after welding any thing not in or under your weld. be for a good epoxy primer goes on. (Also good for stopping rust)
That's stuff seams great I'll have to get some.

Real nice work. Looks like having the engine out made it much easier to do. Waiting to see the finish.

Got around to making the rust repair pieces to cover the holes (I have windows 8.1 and it wont let me open 2 browser's like my XP would so I have to go back and forth between FF.com and photobucket...bear with me while I load 5 pics!)

                    Test fitting

                    There, finally!

Time to scruff 'em up , paint with the Zinc weld through paint and weld 'em!

Hey dan, little tip here most of that weld threw welds like garbage. I spray my pieces then grind where I need to weld.
I know seems like I just defeated the purpose of weld threw but I didn't the primer left between, The 2 pieces will protect them and the out side will be protected by primer and paint.

                              Just about done!

Here is my "I'm not to sure if it's that good of a welder". Don't know if it's that .... or the operator!

                              The first piece in

                              2nd piece in

... and primered with regular primer ( the primer wasn't even dry yet!)

Not the best weld for sure, and not one of my better ones either. That is darn thin metal to weld! But it's done and is better than it was ....

.... thought I'd throw in these before and after pics ....

                              Before ....

                              After ....
