  • What is this thing on the top feeding the throttle?

    see attachment-

    And what does it do?

Not there on the '96 Aspire,
wasn't there on the '88 carbed
just puzzling me on the '91 EFI

Can I get rid of it?
I want to start getting rid of things.....htd

this one pictured is on a festiva for sale in Avon Park FL- pretty sweet!

Silencer. It absorbs intake and engine noise. I have removed one of mine and it does nothing to performance.

Yep. Toss it. It's useless and just clutters up the VC.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

Get rid of it & the flat intake tube.
Put the round intake tube from an Aspire in its place.
Modify the stock intake box by drilling multiple holes in the bottom remove the small snorakle on the side & put in a drop in K&N filter # 33-2222
If it don't fit, use a bigger hammer!

It's called a Helmholtz resonator. They can be used for acoustic purposes, but they can (and are) used to actually improve air flow or prevent flow stagnation at certain RPM. Below is a link, if you want to know why they are used....

Well that's an interesting explanation by some one with a job....

My own thought is that it wasn't there in '88 and not there in '96

It's gone and I don't notice any difference in anything,
tho I've only had the car two days

By luck I had ONE expandable handlebar plug off some junked bike from somewhere-
and though it was a little small, after wrapped with some electrical tape it plugged the hol just fine and even tigtened down solid air tight

Lots of grease and goo underneath-
I think it would just keep heat on the motor- not desirable here in Florida
and only limit air flow around the motor in general-

The strange flat intake, MAP and air filter will probably be there awhile
The pick-your -part here had an aspire or two last summer- but none this year, I keep checking online.....

downloading some photos of the car now-

                Here it is

So far I've touched the wheels a bit
                got the bumpers half painted
and cleaned under the hood some
new oil, new plugs and new coolant

I thought I'd loose the MAF and long tube on the 95 Escort wagon and go with one of those cone filters, but found it wouldn't idle then- so I put the stock box back on that one-

the silencer will not be back on the '91 Festiva!

You can use a cone filter but you must keep the afm it measure the air going into your engine and then knows how much fuel to supply it also triggers the fuel pump when cranking.
You can get a adapter for the cone from rocket man on the forum.
You could also get a universal one and drill some holes.

This thing is very suddenly running really great with new oil and plugs and some run time not pulling-
very slight overfill with fresh 10/40 weight- it was down a half quart and thin when purchased- bathe baby, bathe!
                        you can hear the difference!

just springs to life at first turn
Every reason to believe that 75 k mileage, although motor was not kept clean under the hood- NO RUST anywhere!

other tune-up parts here or on the way
finding chassis wiring ground points to clean up

got the charcoal canister off and the line plugged-
gas filter should be easier to get in now

So I've some weight off the car already, including the back seat which I always lose
I'll hang on to it tho.

has an exhaust leak somewhere that make it rumble a little loud
haven't had time to get under it and track it down
probably be parked in that shed/garage thru the winter

Pulled the front hose off today beween the throttle tube and the MAF/ air cleaner assembly while she was running
and the motor could not have died more quickly
don't like that much about EFI
but havent had any problems w/ the 96 Aspire ten years after.....

                          Still sorting her out-

the detailing under the hood s coming along- I use a lot of chrome paint- makes things easier to see and looks good-
I don't care much if I paint wires or pretty uch everything silver- but I try to keep it from looking oversprayed- I'll steel wool the overspray when I finish
I have the radiator mounts off to paint them individually for instance-

some of the things already silver colored- the mAF and throttle body- are rough and collect grit- the paint smooths them over and makes them easy to keep clean-

                          anyway it's running great!

a little before and after- though not done yet- working from the top parts on down
new air filter in, with plugs-

cap and rotor are waiting on the wires right now- but really pops to life now on first turn of the key.

The "exhaust leak" turns out to be a muffler somehow not connected to it's own front pipe- I finally got underneath- the rest of the exhaust looks almost brand new- not a spot of rust- or anywhere else on the underside parts- EXTREMELY CLEAN! Florida cars are about as good as California cars for not being rusty.
                          It's a keeper!
and will only cost a muffler install.

I see that sweet blue Festiva in the original post down in Sebring was sold- was it anybody here that bought it?-
wish I'd saved the pictures of it - it really was sharp!

                            Heres another in Jacksonville now:

Here's a fantastic deal on an Aspire that needs some work if you can tow it from near Daytona:

I wouldn't just start spraying everything under the hood silver. That's just me though. Car looks nice and factory. Replace your fusible links before you have issues.
