  • What is the usual 12" stock tire size?

And why does ebay keep telling me their 12" tires aren't compatible with my 91 Festiva?

I think I've put in 12x 155/70, which is the size already on it
    and 12x 155/80

What size of 12" tires are y'all running?
    especially regarding the aspect ratio?

What was original, or did the stock sizes change through the years?

    anybody a stock tire expert?

Also where can I get some new tires cheap?

Yes- I was going to at least partly answer my own questions after some research at tire vendors-

I didn't know about the aspect ratio figures before I started-
that's the 2 digit number like 70 or 80- the percentage of the tires height to it's width-
the taller the number, the higher the tire of the same width

I checked the size on the car now- 155/80- 12
and so those "officially" too big-
according to the tire stores at least

the profile's talllness of the tire exceeds the recommended height-

But I haven't driven the car except at the intial test on purchase- didn't notice any issues of rub
and I plan on carefully looking at the tires in the light tomrrow to see if any evidence- don't believe I'll find any
the wide part of the struts are still well over the tire-
perhaps a very full load might push them down enough to be a problem, but I can't say one way or another-

I don't know why either the tire specs would be different from one Festy model to another of the same year-
But I also ran into that issue at the tire stores online too.
I wonder do the wheels vary-? I've always thought the stock 12 s to be the same

anyway, I'M KINDA JAZZED! I thought the tires looked bigger and now I know they ARE bigger than what I used to always have on the old '88 Festiva
I've been toying with the idea of getting 13" rims and tires, and just had reached the point that it wouldn't be cost effective for my use-

but now I realize that the PROFILE is already LARGER! So that's as good at least in some degree as getting the larger wheel size
And I don't have to worry about spacers or anything

I'm pretty sure my old tires mustve been 145 width, which I wouldn't mind for roll, but they wore quickly and the profile was diminutive

I'll probably be staying with this size tire now- 155/ 80R- 12- I'll bet they'll wear longer

below- the old 88- "Diana"- and the new '91

If you look at the sticker in the door jam you'll see that 145SR12 is the standard size while 165/70 was the optional size. The 155 is what I see used most often though. I think they were probably a lot easier to get.

                got any pictures, navdoc?

How much tread left on the tires?

You sure they fit w/o rubbing or extra hardware?

155/80-12s are slightly taller (1/2 inch) than original 145/80 and 165/70s and don't look out of place on a stock Festy. Been there done that. Only real problem with any 12s is finding ones that stay round (ie not cheaply made). If through some fluke you can get hold of Geo Metro/Suzuki Swift/Pontiac Firefly 13s (same bolt pattern) you can seek out better grade, and more common, tires.
Failing that start keeping an eye out for a dead/dying Aspire so that you can do a brake and suspension swap over to 4 x 100 wheels and then all of a sudden you can shop for 13, 14 and 15 inch tires. I ran Nokian 155/65-14s on Kia Rio alloys for a few years and they were absolutely wonderful.

                    Pics in my Profile Album.
I have spacers for the rear to go with them.
                    Tires are good, not great.
                    They are used.
If it don't fit, use a bigger hammer!

Just switch to 13" Geo wheels, same bolt pattern. Then you dont have to run your Festy with 12" trailer tires.

If you're reticent about investing in the Aspire swap to 4 x 100 wheels then Geo Metro rims are definitely the way to go. I regularly come across these at the boneyard and some even have decent rubber on them, and nobody else these days is searching out 13s. And as nitrofarm says 12s have increasingly been relegated to wheelbarrows, golf carts and trailers.
