  • Did something!!!

i just finished cleaning the EGR valve and replacing the o2 sensor with a new one. part number 11027 Bosch

I pulled all the spark plugs and i am doing a seafoam piston soak right now. 2 oz in each cylinder for 1hr. then i will fire it up and after a drive around the block i ill do another seafoam treatment in the vacuum lines.

matt, you realize that the EGR valve reduces fuel efficiency?
I wouldn't waste time cleaning it. I have seen people insert a very short piece of wood dowelling in the vacuum hose so that it will not open up to let in exhaust gas to rob power from the combustion charge.

Also do you have proof that a *properly* working EGR hurts MPG? Because generally when a working EGR system is removed, MPG drops.

I am seeking a little insight on this matter, Many people swear that egr can only take away, many others swear it can add. Just for a little clairification I will base this assumption on a modern, normally aspirated 4 stroke ice running on 87 octane unleaded pump gas with most modern...

Only if the computer is programmed to dump in more gas because it thinks the EGR is working. I presume it is doesn't know what to do with the O2 sensor voltage.
Let's just reserve this info and increased gas mileage for non feedback carbs for now. Besides the EGR only opens at highway speeds and low vacuum signals. That is why smog ECU cars are gutless when you tromp on the gas on the highway.

"The EGR valve, or Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, is a vacuum controlled valve which allows a specific amount of your exhaust back into the intake manifold. This exhaust mixes with the intake air and actually cools the combustion process. Cooler is always better inside your engine. The exhaust your EGR valve recirculates also prevents the formation of Nitrogen related gases. These are referred to as NOX emissions, and are a common cause for failing emissions testing. Unfortunately, your EGR valve can get stuck, causing NOX gases to build up. You'll know if your EGR valve is stuck or malfunctioning because your car will experience symptoms like rough idle and bucking on acceleration. Fuel mileage will also suffer, and you may see a Check Engine light followed by a readable code in your car's OBD-II or newer computer."

I noticed something that may help folks with carbed 1st gen B6's. If you are using the Festy intake, the EGR port will cause a big vacuum leak when the valve opens because 1st gen B6's don't have a port for EGR. The hole in the intake ends up being about halfway open to atmosphere. Probably best to block off the EGR in this case!

Yeah, I wouldn't even wait for the third strike/post. Mods get rid of him.

He is a spam bot. he copied and pasted what i posted yesterday on my build thread... haha. word for word. then he wrote MRO supply at the bottom so people would google it and he would get hits on his website.

                  Ban please.

Haha and you can post your EGR thoughts on my build thread. thanks

There is not a correct answer. There are too many variables that are in use. If you try to apply one rule to everybody's car you will have worse mileage for some and better for others, some with no change. Some will have more power, some less and some no change. Combustion chamber design, computer logic, tune, elevation, exhaust backpressure , engine condition, cam profile, cam timing, carbon build up...the variables and combinations are endless. The "if you do this" can be used for both arguments with no end in sight.

I love to see engines built pure and simple that perform well, I also love to see perfect factory condition. And...that's just my opinion!!

                      This /\

if you are meant to have an EGR and are tuned for it, removing it will result in negative effects(pinging, combustion chamber temps etc)

however if you build an engine and tune out EGR you can see improvements.

I blocked the EGR on my Weber carbed B6 with a 3/8 aluminum plate and gasket.
