  • Question on the 1st generation B6 ...

There is a local JY here that has a load of Mazda's.

My question is, what years, makes, and models do the 1st generation B6 come out of?

Also the 2nd generation B6 as well?

I want to see how many the JY guy might have of those.

    I'll let you all know.

    Thanks

Not sure on the years but one way to tell is that the early intakes come over the top of the valve cover, just like the stock Festiva. The intake on the later B6s goes off to the battery side of the engine compartment.

I believe 1st Gen B6s came only in Pre 90s Mercury Tracers, and Mazda 323s.
Throttle body is aimed over the valve cover just like a stock festiva.
Mine is a 1st Gen B6. Though I am using the stock festiva plastics intake tubes.

2nd Generation came only from 90s Mazda 323s.
Throttle body is aimed towards the driver's side, and valve cover actually has Mazda on it.
If you remember seeing the engine in Karl's Muttstiva that is a second generation B6.

2nd Gen B6 found on google.

Do you guys have any idea if a 1st gen b6 head would be compatible with any b6 bottom? I.e. the b6t block

Gen1 B6s were from 86-89 in Mazda 323s, and 88-89 in Mercury Tracers. Starting in '90, they went to gen2 motors. TorqueEffect's pics are a good reference.

There were (I think) both gen1 and gen2 B6Ts. Gen1 in the Mazda 88-89 323 GT, and gen2 in the 90-94 Capri. All B6 DOHC in whatever car use the same Fel-Pro head gasket BTW, whether turbo (B6T) or NA (B6D).

Gen1 B6s and gen2 B6s use a different head gasket, according to Rock Auto, so there are differences in oil and/or coolant passages. Suggest you PM gauge_half_inch to discuss this more. As I understand it, the gen1 head can be slightly modified to work with the gen2 block. Please report back what he says; or he can of course chime in here himself.

Since you are talking about a B6 head on a B6D/B6T block, see if you can get samples of both head gaskets and note where the differences are. I'm guessing you have one or the other, and you can go to a McParts store to have them show you the other one.

Some of the links are missing in this but it will answer many question you may have about the B series engines.

If you are interested in B8's note that the 91-95 Kia Sephia GS also had the 1.8 B engine.
