VW part question about a subframe

I know some of you guys also work on VW's, so I thought someone on here might have a clue what the red circled bracket is for... Subframe comes from a MK3 Jetta GLX [not the one pictured, but the bracket is the same] and I've never seen that bracket used on 6 or so VW's I've torn apart lately... I'm about to cut it off because unnecessary weight.
