  • 185 70/r13 tires

I am looking to upgrade my stock tires and a full set with rims came up for sale in my area in this size, 185 70/r13 and have the correct bolt pattern and everything. Does anyone else run this size? Will they be to fat? Just right? It's a half hour drive to pick these things up so I don't want to waste my time if they are going to be to wide.

Any advice or feedback is appreciated. Thanks

A little on the tall side. I think you'll need spacers in the back.

Spacers? Am I in danger of the tire rubbing on the wheel well or something?

No, the rub will come from the strut unless you up grade to aspire rear struts.

How wide of a spacer will be needed and will I need longer studs? Is this even worth doing?

Yeah, you will need spacers for 185s. My 175s on 13" Konig Incidents have less than a quarter of an inch between the tire, and the rear strut perches. Fronts had a bit more clearance.

I'd go with 1.5" studs and 6mm spacers. I had the same size tires on my Aspire and had to do this, even with the higher Aspire lower spring perch.

You didn't mention whether they are going on a Festiva or an Aspire? We put that size on my old roommate's Aspire without spacers, there was no rubbing in the front or rear, the offset was a little lower than stock though, I think +35, on 13x6 wheels. When he went back to the stock wheels I put the 185/70s on one of my Aspire swapped Festivas and they hit the struts in the back, and when turning they would catch the fenders in the front. Just a bit too tall.
                No festiva for me ATM...

The only way I'd run 185/70-13s would be if I were building an off road car, preferably with a B6 or larger engine. Those tires will not only be very tall, they'll also strain your B3 and your stock brakes.

If you are putting these on an Aspire, they might work okay, but still consider the added weight and moment arm of the large diameter.

These are the largest sizes I'd normally go:

                  175/70-13
                  185/60-14
                  195/50-15

They are also about the same diameter, which is around 19-21mm taller than stock ride height, and you'll still have to pay attention to your wheel offsets for best fitment results.

Thanks everyone! I realize that I just need to be patient and wait for a good set of 165/66-r13 to show up.

175/70R13 is a great size for Festivas... and they can be had for $30-$40 brand new if you want budget tires.

                        Exactly what I use.

These are the ones I am running on the front.

On the rear I have some Cooper tires of the same size that I got off some Metro rims I used to run on. To be honest the cheapo GT Radials grip better than the Coopers in the rain. I've never had the front end lose grip when it is wet, but have had the back end kick out with the Coopers on entrance and exit ramps while the road was wet. But that is probably mostly due to the poor weight distribution on these cars, with the back end being significantly lighter than the front.
