  • 1988 Ford Escort GT- Worth Saving??

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1423296491.712851.jpg

Is this car worth saving? A guy I know wants it gone, and I was thinking about buying it. It runs rough and has no radio or backseats. Power steering is out too. Body is in great shape though.

Looks good. I'd say it depends on what engine it has

Snoop around on feoa.com and see what you can get for the parts if you bought it and decided to part it out. The front bumpers are a bit rare as are the skirts. I think the motor is a 1.9. Otherwise I don't think you could move any of it to anyone but an Escort guy rebuilding an 88 or 89. If you are keeping it they are a nice car for the period and mechanicals are easy enough to get. Any vehicle specific interior and exterior parts are very likely NLA from Ford. Nice enough for cruising around Gulf Shores.

Yep HO 1.9 in that year. Along with having 4xstupiderthan114.3 bolt pattern.

But if the body is in great shape, I'd grab it. A 2.0 swap would make it a nice driver. People bag on the 1.9 and 2.0 SOHC in the US, but I personally would have another one if the chance came up.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

Body is in great shape. It has the 1.9. 5 speed. I think it would be a neat car! Would backseats from a regular escort from the 90's fit in there? I have found lots of those in the local Junkyard.

I'm not sure. I only have reading knowledge of the early ones. If it really is a GT it has a different 1.9 than the normal ones had. Hemi head and a bigger cam.

Still not worth saving IMO, unless you can just swap to a rebuilt head and be done with it. I'd just swap a 2.0 SPI from a later 90 and up or from an early Focus. I'm not the swapping kind, but in this case even the HO 1.9 wasn't stunning. The 2.0 is a much nicer performing engine stock for stock. Bigger valves, and a roller cam.

You'll get much better info on FEOA.

A friend of mine in high school had one of those and was obsessed with it. Now that the years have passed I can say it was a pretty cool car. I think there are a ton of swaps that can be done fairly easy because that engine series basically turned into the zetec. They share bell housing bolt patterns. It also has the same bolt pattern as several lotus engines (I have an esprit engine I'd sell if you really go nutty with it.) I'm sure there is some way to fit a BP in it as well. They are like any old, forgotten econo hatch… If you like the car then it's worth saving.

                I like the look!

So a newer focus engine can go in it?
