  • non rust belt guys are spoiled

I stopped at a pick and pull in Stockton, CA today. They had 3 Festivas and 2 egt's. ZERO RUST to be seen any where. You guys have no idea how odd it is to see this on a car at a junk yard no less.

Being from Ohio I thought it would be nice to see what was available while I was here. Now I'm a bit sad. Lol

In my mind there wouldn't even be junkyards, there should only be wrecking yards in no rust states.

Like, why would you even junk a car?

      Sigh. I hate rust.

No rust but we have UV degradation, any color fades if stored outside. If we use lead acid batteries the terminals still corrode
        does that count ? lol

I LOVE rust free- my first 88 I bought at Sunset Ford in Westminster California- 175 K without any rust. My aspire I bought at 35 K in INdiana, and 12 years later there's stull no rust- If you keep them clean and especially salt-free- you can keep the rust off quite a bit otherwise. I've sprayed primer grey under my cars for a long time now towards the end of a summer- even the tailpipe and muffler last a lot longer with a little paint for the salt and corrosion to have to get through.

The underside of the '91 I bough last summer looks unbelievably pristine and unrusted, even for a Florida car.htd

To stay rust free in ca you better get the surfing out of your system while in Japan lol

I can relate to this shocking experience. I moved to Phoenix from Maine. In Maine the roads are salted 6 months out of the year and 2 year old cars are often rusting already. In Phoenix you can use an open end wrench to remove 50 year old exhaust manifold nuts off of a farm truck. I'm not exaggerating, it's really that dry out here.
Driving for me is neither a right nor a privilege. Driving is my passion, as it was for the people who invented the automobile, the people who paved the first roads and the people who continue to improve the automobile. Please respect this passion.

Very true, there is still rust problems in California. But because of the salty air from the ocean. But if you take care of your car you should be able to avoid the majority of it.

I dont plan on doing too much surfing however I do like to go Scuba Diving so that may be a reason to hang on to my rusty body and do what I can and just get a second festiva to keep instead of only having one.....

Living here in mn after growing up in California, the difference is night and day. There's something even more sad than a festiva dying of rust, and that's being taken off the road by smog laws. I use to find rust free festivas back in California all the time, some looking like an almost new car, for $500 bucks, because it wouldn't pass the emissions test. I would also see them littering the wrecking yards, half stripped, with out a hint of rust. It makes you want to cry.
                          Because....45 MPG.

I live in the mtns and of course my festiva has rust, they almost all do here, when I wanted to get a 80's Model F-250 truck that didnt have rust I had to drive off the mtn, fortunately only about 30 miles but still, its a real battle to keep salt off one

Over on the coast we used to keep our dory in the machine shed hooked to the pick up. All summer we would leave the farm, go down and back the whole outfit into the surf to launch the dory. A cab would only last a couple years before you could grease the driveshafts from the drivers seat! When the seat started falling through we would put on another cab or get another truck, whatever was available during the winter. Darn Feds ruined that life by stopping our fishing and letting the Japanese have it all.
