was wondering how insurance compares to manitoba canada for festivas or any model 1995 and under up here they write off older cars for a scratch and brand them earrepairable which means can no longer be put on road.i have a 1991 festiva and pay $950.00 a year for basic insurance they tell me any kind of collision or vandalism and car would be written off.how they pay out here is they look on line and find what they are selling for in area and base price on that.doesent seem fair if you sink a pile of money into your car such as tires new paint and up grades. just wandering how other provences and countrys compare to manitoba

I don't know how Canada works but in the US you would have to get an agreed value policy and I don't know if there's a company that would waste their time with a Festiva. I haven't had full coverage insurance on a vehicle since '95, which is when I bought my last new vehicle. I just know if an accident is my fault or a comprehensive claim like a tree falling on my car, fire etc, will be absorbed by me. However, if someone else hits my car, I have a right to fight the other driver's insurance company for a true value of my vehicle.

I pay $300/year for my Festy. And annual city property tax on it is $15.

In Ontario vehicles are taxed and insured on the basis of their 'black book' value. This tends to be based on a low and high range current resale value of similar vehicles. Obviously Festys are no longer noted in the book but pretty much any vehicle that has been safetied and e-tested is arbitrarily figured to be worth $1500. You can or may (if you so choose, since vehicle insurance is handled by private companies) have a vehicle officially appraised and then pay collision insurance on that value.
Myself do not get collision coverage insurance on older vehicles. For instance collision (over and above req'd liability coverage) would have added an annual $500 to insure one of my Festys. Easier to just bank that money and use it in the event of an at-fault crash to go out and buy another one.
