  • Just picked up an 87

Well guys my name is clif and I'll be poking around here for a while. I just picked up an 87 today. All I know is that it has a manual, runs, the Cv's are shot and it's red. I'm pretty well versed in miatas between 2 of my buddies and I we have like 11. From street to straight track.

My plans are to do a autox/track festiva with some kind of motor swap. Idk. A group of us are looking into lemons racing even. i haven't had a chance to read up on it. I was at work today and they said hey u want this car for $200. Yep I'm gonna have some kind of fun with this

Awesome! Welcome to the forum. It's probably an 88 (built in the last half of 87). All the motors you could easily swap into it will be EFI, so be prepared for a major wiring re-do, plus gas tank and fuel pump.

I'm down for what ever. Just about finised my track car. 96 miata trans swap. Rebuilt and balanced "stock" motor. Harness swap and megasquirt. and the list goes on . Done by myself and a couple other guys.
I have access to a couple 3800 supercharged engines. I need to see if that swap has been done. What's common?

Check the engine swaps sections. Lots to read on this site.

Common swaps are the B series engines, if your into miata's then you should know which are which

I went a different route then everyone else and swapped in a KL

          1988 323 Station Wagon - KLG4 swapped
          1988 323 GT - B6T Powered
2008 Ford Escape - Rollover Survivor

1990 Festiva - First Ever Completed KLZE swap (SOLD)

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

First off, welcome to the forum! Second, if you want an easy to build track weapon, throw a Miata 1.6 in it with Megasquirt and a turbo and walk away from all your miata buddies at the track. If you think I'm joking then check this out.

The Miata made 350WHP, the Festiva 180whp. The miata is a dedicated track car, the Festiva is a support vehicle and daily driven car that is now owned by a 60 year old couple that uses it for grocery shopping. haha. Silly sports cars, race tracks are for Festivas. :p

It is just plain ridiculous what a cheap disposable crapcar can do to Miatas, Vettes, Lotuses, etc., at a tiny fraction of those cars' prices.

This is an awesome video. I love how that Mustang--as much as it wants to--just can't overtake you out there

The trans I believe is a G series from a Capri XR2 and the suspension is the brain child of Charlie Advancedynamics and as you can see his suspension modifications Work. If you like to read, use the search button and look for Tweak's rebuild thread, it's a good read.

Yea. I'll look that one up. I've been doing some reading and searching. Just trying to get a |game plan..... I will ask this just because I've looked and haven't found the answer. How many hp will the stock motor and trans handle. I've got enough spare parts to slap a turbo or a super on the carb motor. Until I get the suspension sorted out

100hp is what people have been saying. They really aren't made for long-term abuse, though I've seen someone was reliably driving a B6T with spec clutch and stock trans up in Canada. He might be the guy to ask.

That black Fox body is actually a Capri, and it's a tube chassis race car, with an altered wheelbase and the engine is10" further back than stock. A group of offroad racers built it as a sleeper roadrace car. I stayed just barely in front of him because they wanted to see my weird fwd lines. I was actually a second and a half a lap faster when comparing fast laps. They couldn't get enough of the Festy, king of all sleepers.

That setup was a b6t from a Capri XR2, engine, trans and management. I would just go megasquirt though rather than finding the xr2 stuff. The Capri XR2 has a b6t which is identical to a b6ze(miata b6) under the covers. It's just a low comp version. A Miata long block will get the same results. You will want the tranny from the Capri or an escort gt /protege LX. The weak Festiva tranny won't hold much track abuse with over 100ft.lbs of TQ.
Read through the "Advanced suspension mods" thread that is stickied in the custom suspension, wheels and brakes forum on this site. That car is the car in the write up. The cars name is Tweak. It is non intercooled and runs 16psi with water meth. Stock Capri ecu.

Cool. And I just found out its a 1990. Not an 88. Thanks for all the info. I gotta see if we got a tranny on our yard now

                              So it's fuel injected.
That makes your life quite a bit easier. Congrats.
