  • Removed the cigar lighter

Got a new cigar lighter for Cujo. The old one would not charge my cell phone. The lighter would work, but the center was rusted and not power the center for the cell charger.

Look what I had to do to remove the old one!

    20150329_140740.jpg

I have tried to remove 3 of these from Festys in yards, to no avail! This was the forth one that got mangled, trying to remove it from the dash of Cujo!

After 20+ years, the plastic ring shrinks and really gets stuck!

The new one works great and I can charge my cell now ... Thanks to F3BZ!

I have removed many cigar lighters with no problems (from non-smoker cars).
    Are you removing them properly?
You must rotate the plastic until it lines up with the holes in the metal sleeve, before squeezing the locking tabs.
Ask bondo. He just received the one I sent him. Aloha.

Yes, the ring does need to turn, and Dan, we have spoken about this before.

The ones I have tried to remove, would not budge at all. The plastic ring would not turn, or slide in anyway, including on my festy. Maybe its the Midwest weather, or something, IDK.
The new one I installed I can snap in place and remove it, no problem.

Maybe if I try to get one from a JY, I will spray it with WD-40 and let it soak a bit, then see if that makes a difference

New one was $15 from green sales and it looks nice! I even repainted the little bezel that holds the lighter.

I am using an orange ring from an RX-7 + a lighted Millenia receptacle with our Festiva black metal bezel. My lighter is from a 67 Lincoln Town car. How's that for a combo?

I think heat must have fused the plastic to the shell. Maybe they heated the lighter and partially reinserted it.

The lighted ring is cool. I thought that when I first saw your thread. You may be onto something about the heat. Smoker vs Non smoker cars?

I would remove it all together and make a USB plug.

Can you start a campfire with a USB port ? Sounds like trading a survival tool for a ? Don't they make a USB adapter that goes into a 12 volt port ? That is also where the air compressor is powered from.

By the way if you actually use the lighter to light something you want to carefully clean it before putting it back in. The black junk will make the connection poor. The higher power loads like really big spotlights and air compressors will make the connection itself get hot and burn because of the black stuff.

I have this charger with USB in all 4 vehicles I own. Uses a separate USB cord. Holding up well. I've had a few cheapo chargers that died and this one seems durable. Some of chargers that have built in cords, the cords seem cheap and the plugs bend easily. I like a separate cord
