  • The best performance mods

My take on the best performance mods, and general costs. IMO, in order of importance.

    1. Aspire brake swap: ~$200 at the JY; new rotors/brake pads/rear brakes from McParts, $100
    1. higher-quality tires and wheels (tie for first place): almost free--Metro steelies from the JY plus much better 4-season 13" tires like General Altimax RT43. I say almost free because you need to replace tires every so often anyway, since they are a wear item. Or buy some nice wheels, $100 used - $400 new, and get good performance tires ($400+ a set).
    3. suspension upgrades: low end, Festiva KYBs to replace stock struts front and rear, $200. Stock front springs in rear, free. Aftermarket heavier front springs, or cheap Rio JY springs (cut 1 to 1.5 coils). Coilover setups, $400+.
    4. short shifter: best bang for buck, fun-wise! eBay + assorted washers/bushings; many ways to do this. Or modded stock shifter by Gomez. Call it $20-40. Grab a better shift knob from the JY (early 90s Escort or Protege), $0-$5.
    5. After doing all this, then look at putting bux into a motor/tranny. Even a stock B6 or B8 will do much better with mods 1-4.

Honorable mention: studs instead of lug bolts; steering wheel cover; variable intermittent wipers, Escort dome light with LED bulb; more gauges, esp. tach.

Bottom line, you can have a ridiculously better and funner Festy for as little as ~$500, before motor changes.

That is a good list of important things to do that would make your Festiva better. I would only add, buy a manual and learn to use the forum search.

Upgrading to a performance wheel and tire package makes a huge difference on the cars I've owned. The brakes never bothered me with stock HP, but those 12" tires are just plain scary!

I always liked playing with the vacuum gauge in my festy when it was stock. Probably going to get one for the new car and put it in soon.

I too had decided to make that #1 by a small edge, but my 1/2 hour to change the post had passed.

Seats are a good idea too, I didn't think of that. Fifth place, after the shifter. I like Aspire seats the best.

Best for me bar none was to ditch the 13 inch wheel and tire mods and go back to 12 inch wheel and tires.
There may be a few other mods to make the 12's fit after you have had the awful riding 13's.

Nothing rides like a festiva with a properly fitted set of 4 ATV tires, nothing!!! Even big 4x4 trucks on monster tires are no match
on the washboard gravel roads or dirt. Subarus rue the day they were made!

lol, its all in a point of view, I love the mods you guys do too.

Those are some nice seats! Also a good upgrade. The stock seats are very cheap feeling.

Sorry for the hi jack Tom.
What mods were needed to install those seats, Josh ?

Not a hijack; relevant to performance mods.

I cut the old mount points off with a cut off wheel and made the festiva mounts fit it with a welder.
