  • Salvaging Cruise Control

    Hi guys,

The local junkyard has an LX Festiva with all the goodies: A/C, Power Steering, Rear wiper, and Cruise control, and I'm considering pulling out the cruise control and installing it on my 90 L Plus Auto. I'm not incredibly knowledgeable about cruise control. That being said, what exactly will I need to get from the Festiva when I pull it? I don't want to miss anything.

The thing most people forget to take is the servo cable support bracket + the switch on the clutch pedal for cancelling the cruise on depress (if standard transmission).

I saw this F1CZ-9A818-A on the bay. It looks like it has most of the same parts I had in my Festiva cruise kit. I am willing to bet almost all of it will fit and work. Not much difference with an Escort.
Cruise was the one thing I installed that worked perfectly without any adjustments. It is a pleasure to take my foot off the gas pedal while travelling down the highway.

I was mistaken guys, it does not have power steering. Sorry to disappoint!

Here is what I pulled from the junkyard for the cruise control:

Do I appear to be missing anything obvious? I'm a little lost. It does appear to be an aftermarket system. Only issue I can see immediately is that the Festiva I took this from had a standard trans and mine is an auto.

The only difference should be the clutch cruise cutout switch, I can't see the end of the cruise actuator cable. Where was it attached? Inside the car or in the engine bay?

That's the cable that runs from the servo to the throttle, correct? I do have it, its just not shown completely in the photo.

It is designed to pull. How was it attached to the throttle cable? Was it right beside it on a special bracket?

Yeah it was. That's one thing I'll need to go back and get. But I noticed that the donor car no longer has the large black reservoir on the top of the valve cover. And it appears that I will need to remove it to get the bracket to fit, because the reservoir will be in the way of the cruise cable.

What exactly is the reservoir? Is it for resonance? I've seen several Festivas without it, so what are the effects of deleting it?

I also noticed that where the vacuum line attached to the upper EFI manifold, my Festiva does not have the input for it. Is there a different place I can connect the vacuum line?

The globe is just a vacuum reservoir. Just tap into any good vacuum source. It's vacuum acting on a diaphram that is used to pull the throttle cable.

Ok that makes it a little easier. I wasn't sure if there was a specific input for it. Thanks.

But what about this? The donor car did not have it and the hole designed for the hose was taped over.
