  • Bed frame welding cart

After my festiva died on the opperaring table I've been longing for a nother project, while I was cleaning out my shed I found an old bed frame and thought to my self "this would make a good welding cart" and knowing how cheap I am I didn't want to buy one so I started cutting it to pieces (pics coming soon)

it sucks using an angle grinder to cut with i really need a plasma cuttet but, i was able to get the basic frame parts cut

ok i need someone who's good at welding to help me out the areas i marked in this picture below would be considered undercut right? i almost positive it happened because i had it set a bit "cold" for the thickness of metal i was welding

this is as far as i made it tonight

I don't see any practice welds laying around that really is a pretty good guess for one of the first welds, especially with home type machines that do not have settings for starting amps etc. I agree, turn up the heat a little and increase the speed to control penetration.

I thought of doing this. I grab bed frames from next to dumpsters any chance I get. Then my daughter bought me a welding cart. Looks pretty good so far.

Looks like nice welds to me but it looks like the welding pool should have been a little higher up to allow gravity to bring it down and over lap better? But I have never welded before. I'm just going off the YouTube videos I have watched. What size wire are you using?

Cold welds look like a caterpillar laying on the metal= No penetration. I always practice first to get the heat and speed needed to melt into the metal

I actually had a guy tell me his boss said something like '.....those wide flat beads won't hold s***.' Not sure what he was going by, but I've always found a flatter bead generally has better penetration, and so would hold better. tig beads are always flat.

The tall ones always seem to be sitting on top of the metal mostly.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

ya im going to add shelves or at least one self (thanks DrDDan for the picture) and im thinking about doing a 2 tone color scheme, like do the frame of the cart black and the shelf/shelves red of vise-versa i also added a stick electrode holder the bottom is a bit off center but oh well and i learned a valuable lesson today never weld things up with your test fit item still in the way

and hey the tank chain works well to hang it for paint (just a test)

I've made a lot of stuff out of bed frame angle! Pay attention when cutting it with a band saw though - there are often mineral "inclusions" in the stuff which can quickly ruin a blade...
