I had to run 3 or 4 cans of flush through mine before it ran clear, heat started working and temp went down .admit nothing - deny everything - make accusations -

Show up with $400 in one pocket. (If you do this, meet him in a neutral location like a mall parking lot or something, not on his turf. On his turf, don't bring cash.) See if he'll go for it. If not, start from there, not his asking price. The relevant question is what would you pay for it, not anyone else.
But before you even look at the car, examine the title and his ID to make sure the deal is legally on the up-and-up. Right VIN, in his name, no liens, not salvage.
