Yesterday, coming north out of Salt Lake City on I-15, I decided to take a side trip to the 1869 Golden Spike National Historic Site at Promontory Summit, where part of the old railbeds are still there, though most of the rails are long gone, having been removed and melted down for the war effort (WWII).
There are about 11 miles of Union Pacific railbed they let you drive on.
