I'd gamble it on a worn out engine I don't care about.

But turbos spin so tremendously to pump air, the amount of exposure of wear vs the engine that is getting the air is like a 100x factor.

Over time, compressor fins will tell you just how good your filter is.

They told me k&n are a waste of money.

Well sure but why put a more expensive filter on a worn out engine?
Yes, the compressor sees all the air and is quite small compared to the motor. Same amount of damage would happen to your engine, its just spread out over a larger area. Also all the metal that came off your turbo ended up in your engine.

For the same size and number of pleats of air filter the more air it lets through the less dirt it filters. A flat piece of steel will filter everything out but let no air thru. A screen on your door lets all the air thru but hardly filters anything. Surface area being equal any filter is just more like a screen door or more like a piece of steel than the next filter.

They have to be oiled. You oil em before you stick in in the car. What you need to do instead of using 10w40 or whatever you said just run k&n filter oil in the crankcase and turn the air filter every now and then. Yould never have to service it!

Just modify the top of the filter housing to only bolt onto the filter so that the element is exposed and take your hood off. Then modify another hood to funnel air to the air filter. Faster you go the more power you will get. When you hit 200mph itl be like 20psi of boost!

? Probably. Probly even more than one person. Probably someone in a repair shop with a fouled up MAF sensor from it too.

But that got me wondering, if you put k&n filter oil on a regular paper filter would it filter better? I have a feeling the paper would disintegrate, but maybe theres something special about their filter oil? Maybe if you had a wire backed paper filter and sprayed it with their oil... Anyone tried it or wanna try it? Their oil and cleaner kit probably costs more than 3 regular air filters so im not just gonna buy it to try it. But anyone have some of that oil hanging around and are as curious/dumb as me and want to see what happens when you spray it on a paper filter?
Jason_ do you have some oil left over your not gonna use and a used/dirty paper filter?

Paper won't dis in oil I don't think. Oil filters use paper elements.

I would think a paper filter is already restrictive enough without oil though.

If you ever used a K&N their oil is a very light oil , kinda like 3 in 1 oil.
K&N filters are cloth/cotton not paper.
Don't think it would work to well with a paper filter.

I personally don't care for K&N. My brother bought a filter kit for his once 1st gen RX7 it came with the oil & cleaning kit. My dads regal had a K&N air filter. Someone before him over oiled it which caused the MAF sensor to crap out. I just took the filter & threw it away. Replaced with a WIX.

Pastfestysho I think (vince) bought a K&N filter years back for his cold air set up. Worked swell until the seal went bad so I replaced it with some autozone brand cone

I never bought the over priced shit.

Hosed it down with a spihon sprayer with compressed air and gasoline then dipped the filter in a bucket of used motor oil. Whirled it around outside, back on it goes.

Once I saw how bad floaties whacked up compressor fins, I lost interest.

Luckily the fuel management had no electronics. All old school.

A pump. 12v solenoid, that died, so I used a ball valve. Turbo with no waste gate. No glow plugs, too cheap to replace them.

Bitch is dependable.

I have used k&n for a while, I've had them in three different vehicles but the newest one I put it in is my wife's Toyota Avalon 06 with a v6 with 106k when we bought it now 224k she drives alot, this car seems to love that thing we had it for about six months then I put in the k&n mpg went from 26 to 28 on a consistent basis not a huge jump but pretty good for just an air filter. This is my best experience with these filters otherwise I really didn't see a difference in the other vehicles I put it in, just really like not having to change them just cleanm and oil stickum back in. Did order one for my carbed festiva got it for 40.99 with a 10$ off rebate very curious how "The Steve" reacts to the new filter
