Mile marker Mo 21 northbound I55 around 2 pm today.

A Festiva pulling a car dolly! There's a Festiva sitting at a house close to mile marker 26. Interested in seeing if the car is still there. Or if a dead festiva is on the side of the road tomorrow.

Will anybody on the form fess up to doing this? I can see someone using a tow bar for a short distant and slower speeds. But trying to pull a car with a dolly on the interstate?

It would work for a 5 speed festiva as the one that's not on the dolly but don't try with a auto festiva... Will burn the clutch disks

What size car were they pulling? I could see a small hatchback or Miata being easily towed, since I used to load my Aspire with 1,000 to 1,500 lbs worth of semi-truck axle parts & it never had a problem with the clutch, brakes, cooling, or suspension. It actually rode like a Cadillac.

I believe Damkid pulled a 323 GTX with an Aspire from Virginia to Ontario.

Also old yellow if the car is on the dolly the drive wheels arent turning.

That was amazing! The best was when he pulled out to pass.
But for towing i pulled a 3600 pound 1989 cutlass supreme 50km and my car still runs fine. i took gravel roads and didnt do freeway speeds though.

Nice! I like it looks a bit top heavy somehow... Any problems with it swaying?
And a question to both you guys: did you have stock or aspire brakes and how was the stopping power?

With this trailer,68 - 75 lbs toung weight works well, any less and it will sway.
Aspire hubs, knuckles, and axle swap (torsion bar cut out), Festiva front springs, early Miata rear springs. Negative camber all around. Mk5 VW bump stops all around. Miata booster and master. 14x6 Miata alloy wheels, 185/60-14 tyres.
                      No stoping issues.
I should mention the stoping was just as good with the stock booster and master till the master failed. We can't seem to get Festiva masters worth a $h1t out here.

Aspire front brakes, kybs and FMS springs. Stopping is fine, Just needs more room to stop.

                          Some things shouldn't be done.

Ok thanks. Im thinking about pulling a 1000-1200 pound trailer with a stock festiva through a hillier area. I think it will be fine. I put 700 pounds of sheep wool in the back of the festiva and drove 150km and it was fine other than bottoming out over every bump. This is still a long ways off and i might not do it, but thanks for the replies.

I pull a trailer with mine and once took 1200 pounds of steel to the scrapper on a stock ride. About 15 miles and it was alright, but that would be pins and needles for a long ride. You want to stiffen up the suspension a little and if you can, a B6 swap would be nice. I even flat towed an F150 about 3 miles, but that was SCARY!

B6 swapped, and a little extra rear spring, and I can flat tow a Festiva all over the country no problem. Pulled an Aspire with a tow dolly once, would consider heavier cars as well, but not with one of the Uhaul heavy duty dollies.

I've towed loaded U-Haul enclosed 4x8 trailers several times recently, once from Boston to DC, later up to Detroit, all on Interstates. See photo.

I try to keep the speed to about 55 (obviously in the slow lane), and have only done these long hauls on weekends to minimize traffic. I once jackknifed on a cross-town run on I-94 in Detroit doing about 30mph during a snowstorm -- people certainly give you plenty of room after seeing that!

I follow U-Haul's instructions and load such that the hitch goes down about one inch during loading. I get about 27mpg towing using this '93 manual. The hitch is custom made to attach to the strong rear tie-down brackets found on the later years (definitely not on 88s/89s). I think these U-Hauls weigh about 900 lbs empty, so my loaded weight was pretty substantial.
