B6T blown head gasket

What is the normal cause? Abuse? Boost turned up?

I have the opportunity to buy an xr2 with a blown gasket but comes with the kit to repair. I know I need to check the head for cracks.

Anything else to be worried about?

Of course it will be going into my 200 dollar festy (24hrs of lemons car).

CHeck head like you said. You can look at oil to see how much coolant got in it. Lots and lots of coolant might be a bad sign. Check the coolant for oil. Look at the motor with a close eye. It sounds like its a decent deal for your needs tho.
