Trying to solve the idle, surging issues. Its 89 carbuereted model, does not have a tps or maf sensors on the car as it was a pre OBD car. The vacuum lines are great, no leaks. What could possibly make this thing idle high, and it acts like it's still pressing gas even when not pressed. I notice the throttle body doesn't close all the way sometimes. Any suggestions would be most helpful!

With a carb I think you'd always usually start with the float. If it's not floating it's not cutting off the gas is how I think it works. I'd get a rebuild kit- they aren't expensive, or -and the carbs are rare- look for another carb you can try while rebuilding the first- more just to have a supplemental one.
You might be able to unhang the float without any rebuild, but that could be lost labor as well. I don't recall how accessible the float tank is with the carb still on the car. You can research the repair on the net and with the search engine here, or with a manual..
I had an 88 that I bought at 175K and drove to 275 k+ (the speedo cable broke then, and after losing everything in a flood, I never got a chance to replace t)
Anyway, it ran great, especially when I took all the lines off the carb and plugged them (NOT the timing advance though)
Many people on here get an adapter and put some other carb on like an escort carb- if you're not that hip or wantuing to overhaul the carb that much, I'd start with the rebuild kit- I did that once and used most of the parts without difficulty, including a new plunger guide, but it's been more than a decade ago now, so my recall is faded.
Also maybe the choke kickdown lever and cam aren't kicking down- you should be able to see that visually- and again I think the solution would lie mostly in a rebuild kitLast edited by harpon; 04-13-2016, 06:28 PM.Comment
