Identifying 5 speed vs 4speed

How can you tell the difference between a 5 speed and 4speed transmission thats pulled out of a car. I noticed it has a number stamped to it. Can that help me figure it out? Any help appreciated thanks

Put a screw driver in the shifter bolt hole and turn left and right and back and forth.
5 speeds will have 6 positions and 4 speeds will have 5
