  • New 88 festiva member questions

So I stumbled on a random ad on clist on my daily skim and found an88 festiva that "runs and drives". Call the guy and he is literally around the corner from my house so u have to stop by and look at it. After a look over and start up I'm ready to buy so I say I will grab it the next day when I have a ride to follow me home. Go to pick it up the next day and the shifter is like an accordion. Only have 3/4 and reverse... So I limp it the 1.5 miles back to my house anyway. Get it home and see that its literally held together by hose clamps where the u joint meets the trans and linkage arm... There are no bushings anywhere from what I can tell. So I pull it apart. I've read the home made bushing thread on here thread and figured I'd give it a shot. so I have the 88 Honda shifter arm with bearing on order(should be here by Friday).

    My question is this.

The arm where the linkage arm meets the bottom of the shifter has a fork. Mine is pitched and not perpendicular to the linkage arm. Is this bent or made by design that way. And if made by design, which way should the slanted fork oriantate in relation to driver or passenger side of vehicle.

Also which bolt diameter do I need to fit through the new bearing. And where can I get a new boot that marries it to the trans?

Any info would be great thanks

Pretty sure the offset part of the fork on the shifter arm is toward the passenger side.
I just took this picture reaching under from the drivers side of the car.

I'm pretty sure I have extra bushings for the shifter arm and the big bushing that goes in the front where the stabilizer arm attaches to the transmission. Also have a standard size bolt and nut to attach the shifter arm to the gear shift. I don't know anything about the Honda shifter arm though.

Thanks 1990new that's exactly what I was looking to confirm. I didn't take notice while taking it down intially so I was worried. I appreciate the part links as well but that's about 1/3 of what I payed for the whole car so I will try and follow through with my budget fix for now. Once I have the shifter I'll just bring it to the hardware store with me. I'd be interested in the big bushing for up front if u want to part with it. How much shipped to 08361.

I'm normally a vw head so this is all new territory for me but so far this car seems so simple I can't go wrong. Some other issues thes car has is the blinker stalk is loose and goes on randomly, looks like the valve cover gasket is leaking pretty good and the temp sensor gauge has no reading. Anyone have parts or advice in tackling these jobs I'm all ears. Only other issues is a little rust and and no battery tie down but only time will tell.

BTW... welcome to the forum. There is a ton of information on here that will tell you about everything there is to know about Festivas. The search function is a little frustration to use (should be more like a google search..but it isn't) so you will need to be patient as you learn. Best thing to do is read up on how the search function works and utilize the advanced search function as well. Putting more than 1 word between double quote marks will help you sometimes.

That stabilizer bushing weighs an ounce so I can put it in a small bubble envelope and send it to you via USPS first class using two stamps. Let me get this clear.. you are getting new shift bushings for the shift connection and the transmission connection already but you are not sure what bolt fits those other bushings at back? front where it connects to transmission?
Let's see what else you might need that I might have to help you out before I send anything. You might need to replace your entire colum multiswitch to fix the turn signal (and maybe not) but there are different types between the years.
Be sure to remove the steel core before trying to remove the front stabilizer bushing (it may be rusted badly) and then put the new bushing in before inserting the steel core. (I have one if your is too badly rusted). Lets see exactly what you need in the area first but I can probably send you all related parts for no more than $10.

I have never owned a carb Festiva so I am not the best person on the forum to give you advice in that area but there are lots of other people here who can help you there.
First thing you need to do is make a post telling as much as you know about the car. Year, Model (L , LX etc), ATX/MTX (we know mtx already), efi, carb, mileage, and known issues, modifications, general condition of body. Create a photobucket account if you dont have something you can post pictures to and link them in your posts here. Pictures tell us a lot.
Then when you ask questions we will already know about these things so we can answer questions better.
I just bought a new valve cover gasket on ebay with bolt grommets for $5 shipped recently. Careful though some parts are different between the years but the majority are the same. You can also find Festiva service manuals on ebay for under $10.
You will not regret buying one.

Rust can be a problem cosmetically, structurally and electrically (connection point corrosion).
No temp reading could be a bad sensor or a bad connection (not likely an instrument panel problem).

Congrats on your buy and welcome to the site, we are here to help but do try the search button first, when typing in the search box, use Double quotes at the front and back of what you are searching for. Again Welcome

No quotes are necessary for a single word. Double quotes are required for a phrase of two or three words together (just like a Google search). The words will be highlighted when found. A secondary thread search may be necessary if there are many pages of comments.

thanks for all the feedback, seems like a really helpful site so far. I will post a in depth thread when I get some time to create a photobucket account, I cant go on there from my work computer.

The thread I found for the Honda shifter is here:

and for the home made bushing replacement I found this:

but I don't see the bushings 1990new pictured anywhere and none are on my linkage now. I thought there should be but this is new territory for me.

again I will load pics as soon as I can to aid in showing you what I can see on my end.

              Thanks again all.

Welcome to the site congrats on ur 88! Does it still have that crazy medusa carb on it? Mine is an 89 and none of the sensors on the original carb worked at all. So i ended up going with an 81 escort weber carb loven this carb. Again welcome.

picture worth a 1000 words. your shifter should have all parts shown. some parts are available from a kia dealer since they were used on kia cars especially Kia Rio. shifter bushings are common to a lot of other fords also.

The diagram doesn't show the boot that you have to stretch the small opening over the bottom part of the shifter before you put it down through the housing from the top.
Here is what it looks like and the part number:

Update: car is now shifting into all 5 gears. Woohoo. Next job I'm tackling is the leaking valve cover gasket. Found the gasket on eBay for under $10. Any thing to b careful of or I should do in conjunction with this? Also the carb seems to be choking the cars under aggressive acceleration and I from what I found the stock carb is kinda wonky, what's the best/ most economical replacement or is it better to do the $20 tune up kit and stick with stock carb?

Lots of Mazdas and Kias used the same bushings, as well as the Festiva and Aspire. Some dealerships will sell them to you individually, but you could just buy a bag of 'em (10 per bag I think). Might have to special order the bag. But now you have them already at hand for future repairs, or other cars. To do the whole shifter arm takes 6, if you also do the non-removable joint; but just doing the two under the shifter will provide the most benefit. Often the two in front that you can do easily will not be as worn.
