  • Things you look for at the junkyard...

I usually have a simple shortlist of things to look for when it comes to my vehicles but I'm interested in learning about those "special" things YOU might like to look for during a visit to the junkyard. Festiva tachometer clusters, factory AC components, Rio brake components, etc. are sort of obvious and could be added to the list but I'm more or less talking about things like better horns from other vehicles that are plug-and-play with ours,or parts from weird cars that can be adapted to ours for practical purposes. You know what I'm talking about.

Wheels... Old school alloys and interesting steelies. Era specific switches. Seats. Headlamps. Bumper skins.
    Trees aren't kind to me...

    currently: 2 88Ls (Scrappy and Jersey), 88LX, 90L(Pepe), 91L, 91GL (Skippy) 93 GL Sport (the Mighty Favakk), 94 (Bruce) & 95 Aspire SEs, 97 Aspire (The Joker),
94 Justy 4WD, 87 Fiero GT, plus 2 parts cars. That's my fleet.

Yessss... before that abomination called "cash for clunkers" there were a plethora of old neat jap wheels everywhere, now they are like hen's teeth. Volvo front lips are always worth a look and usually fit many applications.

One more "note," no pun intended, but the factory horn on the 3rd gen 4Runners are really wimpy. I replaced mine with some from an LS400 which sound so bossy. Direct plug and play too. Normally the bigger the vehicle the bigger the horn sounds. Eventually I want to wire up a relay that can play the Super Mario Bros theme or something by collecting the right notes from various vehicles.

This shows the Miata Armrest, Crank, and Tracker door cards.

I am not sure if the Black Handles were ever sold in a US Mazda, I imported mine from Germany.

Thank you for sharing that pic. Looks very stock which is what I prefer.

I once met a local Cressida owner who salvaged a water pipe junction from a first gen 200sx, the one with the dual spark plug per cylinder, and integrated it with his 1JZ swap to easily adapt a water temp sensor for easy access the ECU. I wish I had taken pictures at the time but it's little tiny things such as that which are cheap to go ahead and snag. If not for us, but for at least other members.

Yea, I am working on a huge list of such parts. The miata handle bolts right in to the stock door, there is even a hole already for the extra bit.

When I get a better way to format my huge list, I will post it here.

I use 1988 Buick Park Ave horns, plug n play
An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.

Just got some plug and play horns from a massive Buick Roadmaster. Anything that has the single spade connector seems to work PnP.

All cables: speedo, throttle and clutch, and the speedo gear in the tranny. Just trying to think of stuff Rock Auto doesn't sell.

Ignition switches, if keys are in the car.
