Does anyone know if you can take an early 88-90 odometer apart and reset it? I know they generally try and prevent this to prevent fraud but I was curious if a person was motivated if he could pull it off. I have a car with original 88k miles but I bought a new cluster and I'd really love for it to report correctly.

    Thanks!

Yes it can and has been done. I've done that service several times for other members.

Yup, my method doesn't involve removal of the barrel.

When I did the tach cluster swap on Tweak, I used the original non tack speedometer assembly. I had to file the gauge face a bit and install the trip meter from the tack cluster. This made the mileage accurate to the car, and gave the car both a trip and tenths on the odometer, which we didn't get in this country.

Suggested reading if you want to know how the gauges work and also how to repair them : Magnetic Speedometer Repair by Graham Blighe.
It is available online for $27.00. It is becoming harder to find people to work on the old style gauges and the repair prices have gone up accordingly.

There's a reason I'm not posting my method is the potential legal ramifications, and possible miss use.

If you like I can email you directly with pictures.
