  • RIP transmission. Car won't move.

Okay so, I made the mistake of going up a 4wd track in the festiva. There was a big rock hidden in the grass. Fast forward five minutes and I'm jacking the car up to get the rock out from underneath. Now it's stuck in park and there's no pressure when shifting through p, r, n, d etc. I was going to manual convert it anyway so I'm not too phased about the transmission, I just hope the rest of the car is okay. It starts and revs, just doesn't move out of park. I need to get it from the hill it's on to my house, but I can't tow it because the wheels are locked. Is there anything that can be done?

What do you mean no pressure?? No resistance when moving the shifter? Can you get under it to see what you've mangled or knocked loose? It could be something as simple as shifting out of park manually from under the car. Just be careful since you mentioned it's on a hill.

Yeah no resistance would be the better word. I'm headed up to look at the car now, what would I need to do to shift out of park from under the car?

Pull the shift cable, but it's very possible the damage is internal, in which case, you're SOL. Since you're doing a manual swap, just drag it down the hill till you can get it on a dolly.

If your lucky you just broke the shift cable and will be able to change gears by hand where the cable goes to on the transmission.
