  • No speedometer

Just got done rebuilding my front end which included new axels and trans fluid replacement . Took it for a test drive and everything seemed good as I listened for noises. Headed back home and realized I had no speed gauge. Everything else seems proper but I do believe I'm about a half court shy in trans fluid. Any guess to my problem?

Cable isn't seated in the cluster...?

I doubt it as I did not touch the cluster, the only thing I can think of is when I took the bolt out by the speedo cable to fill the trans oil. is there a certain orientation that needs to go back in?

No specific orientation, the gear should find it's own slot once the sending unit is inserted. It may be possible that the cable failed, or it shifted off the cluster as it was being moved around. I'd reach under the dash and make sure it's seated there first if you have a tach cluster. If not a tach cluster, pull the cable base first and inspect the cable itself.

You had to remove the speedo gear from the trans to fill with fluid. Did you put it back in deep enought? Did you bolt it down to the trans? Most likely yes but something to check.

The cable assy itself will unscrew from the speedo gear. Once done the drive cable can be removed. Check to see if the cable is broken. This would be a good time to clean and lube cable. Check to see it gear is moving.

            Good luck

Tach is not connected to the speedo operation in any way whatsoever.

The Cable only goes in the Speedo Gear one way but it shouldn't have been able to screw down if you had it wrong. You could have pulled it out of the Cluster on accident when you pulled it out of the Trans. I have also had a speedo not work because the Cable got pushed too far in and was putting pressure on the back of the cluster.
