  • Fuel management, what your useing, and help for noobs

So I'm starting this because I would like to learn. Im sure there are many others that would like to also. I don't think our members should be monopolized. But please do not take offense to this. We need to share our experience. I said it on the maps thread, and I'll say it here. It's about paying it forward. I believe we also should have another section or article on only fuel management. So that being said, let's hear about what your doing and why?

For tuning software what are you all using, why are you using it. It's very important we discuss this in a manner that everyone can understand. Not everyone can or will pick up the information instantly. So let's be kind to one another. Especially when we start getting those like my self wanting to learn and asking a lot of questions that may or may not be obvious to us.

    Things that should be listed
Ease of use: beginners, intermediate, advanced, and the occasional WTF.
    Payment: free, paid
Program use: trial, full, partial until paid upgrade
What does it look like: dos type, matrix movie coding, fluffy clouds and unicorns. Pun intended hopefully you get the point
What the software is for: universal, specific, (one or more)
Things to be aware of when choosing?

We also should create a simple go to for common setups.
Example: most members try to crawl through the threads. Looking for scattered info. And I must say you guys have done an awesome job on consolidation. It's just the other specific details that get over looked or just aren't mentioned. By of which none is any one's fault.

Things that should be listed. Purely example
    B3 common setups.
If this range of injectors...probably use this fmu... with this ratio...
    B6 common setups
If using the b3 full b3 wiring...
    B6D common setups
    BP
    Bpt
    BP+t
    B8

I think you all get the point. We should limit our selves to common mods that are popular and maybe not so much on the absolute custom. Reading about these things can be very very time consuming. So I believe that if we are to just list the parts as I did in the above examples. Our visual cues would be more responsive to finding them, if that makes sense. When we list things all together in a wrap around text things start getting over looked. I do realize that this is a daunting task but for those who know the common setups can easily list the suggestions and their variables. Then we could compile them together to be untouched.

Anyone one that says Google is your friend. They need to realize that you are right but Google is not specific content to our specific cars. And this is the site to specifically research about our needs. Just had to put it out there cause it always comes up.

Now on another part. My car. I will put it out there I know I need a wideband. I'm working on it. Shadetree and I did some beautiful work on this beast. I will not be posting any pics because of third party apps. It sucks and too much work rather than just clicking upload. But anyway. I have a fully rebuilt 91egt engine, full Capri electronics, stock Capri turbo, rocketman b6t ECU, Wal 255 external pump, stock unmodded Carby gas tank, and I'm sure some other stuff I'm forgetting right now. But my fuel is really rich. Cause I can smell it. Which is why I need wideband. So after I get it. I would like to get better fuel management. I would rather go with something like mega squirt but it doesn't have to be. Which is why not only for my own benefit. I would like to see listed options for all of our members to see and for my self. I really hope that this will take off and not just fall on it's face.

Thanks for the example. This is why we should have another section dedicated.

I think he is suggesting a section dedicated to engine management specifically, not a bad idea as a number of members are conversant with this, and others would like to learn.
I'm not sure it fits well in any current section.

An engine management section doesn't seem like a bad idea.
The thing is, there aren't enough swapped well-documented Festy's to have "normal" in all of the categories. There are pretty much no 2 built exactly alike. So no matter what it will take some research to figure out how you want to do it.

          Here are my observations:
Most people running N/A are doing so on a stock ECU (BP, B6D etc).
B6T - most people are running capri wiring w/ capri ECU or Rocketman modified ECU.
Most of the non-OEM management you will see will be MegaSquirt. Relatively cheap, tons of information on every miata, escort, etc forum. There are quite a few members running MS but I haven't seen anyone post up many specifics to their builds. I would consider this "intermediate" - you can pick the level of complexity based on whether you buy a DIY kit or a nearly PnP option. diyautotune.com
A handful of people are running RusEFI. I would consider that "advanced" because it's still fairly developmental. rusefi.com
          Carlos is running FuelTech
There are a bunch of other higher-end options out there too, but most cost 2-10x the average festiva. Microtech, Haltech, AEM, etc.

So here's a start. Specifics are listed very well elsewhere. Post your set ups only if you know exactly what you have. Or if you install for others regularly. And if they run well. Mine I've been going strong for a year. It does need tuning but a set up like this will get you going for a good long time. These types are the ones that need documented. Fine tuning will come when we get those that are more tech savy. So they can post like my example in post #1 about other options and program use.

            Type of setup: BP+t
            Vehicle: 89 fest
            Block: BP (egt)
            Injectors: b6t (Capri)
            Wiring: b6t (Capri)
            Fuel: 87
            Fuel regulator: b6t (Capri)
Fuel pump: Wal 255 external, mounted on firewall next to booster for ease of access
Fuel tank: stock Carby (disabled stock pump)
Turbo: b6t (Capri with swapped cold side)

You're running a BP+T on Capri electronics which is fine, I did it for several years.

              But you're running a VJ14? And 87 octane?

Yes why not. No mechanical failure, no ping, knocks, nothing. Runs just fine. Going a year strong no problems. Need a more credible source than my self, just ask shadetree.

You're trying to solve a problem that no one else is having imo. And if you're looking to go beyond stock stuff you should have to do some searching and reading so you understand how and why it works. You're going to be the one installing it and tuning it so you you're going to be the one trouble shooting it when it's not right. We can only help so much when it's not there in front of us. Also what worked for someone else might not work for you.

Never said there was, read, read, read. I've already explained what the reasoning is in post #1

Ok seems like only 2 so far are getting the point. This is for those, that when they do a swap in there car. They know that if they look at what could be a compilation of great info. Any one of these configurations would work for them if they get confused on what to look for. So just because it may be the simplest. It may not be available to them. So they could look at the next option. So on and so fourth.

Let's keep on subject. If you don't want to contribute, well don't. Seems as though this would be a great go to for setups. And those that want to add management they can see what is commonly used. If it is easy to use. And by seeing it they know they can just go to the site and read up on specifics. Specifics of example Ms diy, plug n play, pro plug n play. 1, 2, micro, or 3. Those that know more should list what they have and why. It's better to hear from a fellow tiva owner and what they are using for their application. Rather than hear from a chonda owner or sales rep that'll sell you anything.
