  • high idle on start up...HELP

i have a 90 5 spd festiva 1.3L. I was boosting my ole lady's car off a couple months back and upon starting her car out of no where radiator cap blows off the festiva its shooting antifreeze in the air and it sounds like someone laid on the gas just hammering down on the pedal. I ran to turn the car off not sure of what was going on then restarted the car, idle just instantly screams. I let it set for a few days waited and started it again even on a cold start it instantly jumps to high idle and im not say high idle as in between 2 to 3 rpm. I've asked around my local shop shops an all i get is test your components and the idle air control valve needs cleaned or u need to replace it, so i cleaned the one off the car and had to replace the temp sending unit it was faulty but still idles high its up there still an other suggestions??

Check the throttle cable and make sure its not too tight and pulling open the throttle at idle. You may need to loosen it a bit. You could also try adjusting the idle air control screw next to the throttle body.

Check the door on your VAF to make sure it isn't stuck open.
Check the Throttle plate to make sure it isn't stuck open.
      Check the Idle Air Screw.

That is where I would start.

Do the EFI cars have an automatic choke? Or some equivalent which makes the car run rich on startup? I get that occassionaly on my carbed engine. It's some combination of of what's in the float bowl and the choke. The way to stop it on a carbed car is to step on the gas and release to release the choke.

PS If you post this kind of question in the Repair Help Foum more people will respond.
