  • Introduction and questions...

Howdy. This is my first post here. I'm shopping for my first festiva, and this forum seems pretty legit. I grew up around vw's... I still love them, but the things that drew me to them in the 90's (small, go-kart feel and cheap to buy!) are just not the case with the newer vw's, and mk1 and mk2's have gone up in price/are getting hard to find in decent shape. Seems like a festiva could meet those same requirements!

I found one for sale somewhat local to me. It's an 88 with a 5-speed, seems to be in very good shape. Factory aluminum wheels, new tires, new exhaust, 200k miles. It is not running. Owner says they were driving along, everything was normal, and it just quit, as if someone flipped a switch. He put gas in it, thinking maybe it had run out. Nope. Took it to a mechanic, who apparently replaced most ignition components, figuring it was a no spark issue. Still not fixed. He claims it didn't jump time... from my experience with other cars (and more specifically, other 'mechanics') I'm guessing he's wrong, and the timing is off.

Would this story scare any of you away from it? Eventually, I'd like to swap it, but that would likely be down the road. I'm hoping I can buy it and get it running relatively quickly/cheaply. It seems like most parts for these cars are dirt cheap... is there anything I should be aware of before taking the plunge? The price is $400, and supposedly it has zero rust. I know to check underneath.

One final question: what should I expect as far as highway mpg? I figured with this type of car, there would be an official mpg thread on the forum or something, but I don't see much discussion about efficiency. Am I just missing it?

Welcome. If it has a 5 speed, it was swapped because the 88 carbed models came with a 4 speed. If it truly is rust free and fairly good shape, $400 is a good price, in my opinion. I personally prefer EFI over carbed, but if the price is right... It could have jumped timing or belt broke, but any basic mechanic should be able to figure that out, but seeing how he replaced a bunch of ignition parts, sounds more like a parts changer.

I'm betting a broken timing belt. For $400 rust free Lx I would buy it. Festivas are normally cheap and easy to fix yourself. 40 to 45 mpg. Post some pics.

          Good luck

If it's carbed, it can be easily resuscitated.

A compression test will tell you if it has jumped time with only a few minutes of effort. I have found that if you have multiple cylinders under 120 psi then you are at least a tooth off.

And here I thought everyone would tell me that a carbed car isn't even worth buying. [emoji16]

Yes its a carb. But it is also a rust free Lx. The Lx was the best looking Festiva.

Smoker, please post a picture of your car.

This is the first and only car that I ever drove with a computer controlled feedback carb.
I switched to a non-feedback carb setup and threw away my computer.
                    It runs much better now!

We didn't have very many problems out of those carburetors - if I recall correctly. My little sister had an 88 4 speed, and all I ever did was de-gum it about once a year with that motorcraft spray carb tune up cleaner(foamy). We used to get mid 40's (hwy.) with a 4 speed, could get into high 40's if you could keep speed to 55-60mph. Should do a little better with a 5 speed, but I think that was B4 all the alcohol in the gas.

I have a carb from an 86 Ford Escort with an adapter from the festiva store. It took a little bit to get it working, but it’s an easy swap to do away with the feedback carb.

FWIW my first Festiva was an '88 with a 5 speed. I bought it used with 100k on it and put another 90K miles on it with no carb. issues. Seeing that it is a 30 year old non running car I would offer him $200 for it. Good luck!
'88 Festiva LX 5 speed, A/C, Carb, restored $$$ body paint, badly wrecked @ 200k.
'93 Festiva L, 5 speed, Aqua, bought from the original owner,.Zero rust but very nasty otherwise. Awaits the B6T.
'91 Festiva L, 5 speed, bought to drive while putting the B6T in the '93. now B6ME powered.
