Now that I've only got Festivas (no more pick-up truck) hauling long things is problematic. Time for some roof-top racks! Wood & cardboard mock-ups (the real ones will be steel):

Those blocks under the poles are just jigs - won't be there in the finished units. 16 Gage end plates affixed to the car with pan head screws and 16 Gage wall 1" square tube rails.

Here is the remainder of one of the same design from my old k-car:

Much stronger than you might think. I remodeled my last house carrying everything on that k-car - drywall, wood, new bathtub, etc.

my concern would be were they mount. After a while they might stress and lossen up or rust. They do look great by the way

Use stainless fasteners. I like having a rack for the car. Makes picking up plywood easier, I've also carried a 20' ladder on it. When the rack is on the car I always carry a couple of stanley quick clamps to hold stuff to the rack.

      Here's mine:

That might come in real handy. I put some ladder racks on my van. They really come in handy but make a lot of wind noise. I take them off if I going on a long trip and wont need them because of the noise.

Is that some new breed of Douglas "fur" you are hauling now?
Currently Festiva-less. Please don't hate me

Very noisy above about 35 mph (as someone here warned). Made a masonite air dam for the front one and it fixed the problem. Just got back from metal fabricating friend's shop with a steel version. Will install it tomorrow. Pictures at 11

There was a Festiva at FF05 with one of these racks on it! So I guess there is a option that I DO NOT want!

You have distrubed the sleek aerodynamic nature of the car. There goes the gas mileage. Looks good ! I wonder if a guy could design it so the two cross members could be removed and installed quickly ? If its possible it could be done.

I guess thats is a factory festiva cargo rack. ? Looks like it might have adjustable sliding cross bars?
