  • Angel on my shoulder..

Well, I had a brake problem that I thought was a bypassing master cylinder. Swapped and still had the same problem. What I didn't realize was that my passenger side wheel was wobbling. Not bad, but enough to make me check the strut to see if the nut at the top had come loose or something. Well it started rattling on my way home. Freeway 70-80mph. Almost home I started out from a light and it dropped and started scraping the heat shield. Zippy became almost unmovable, and the brakes went to the floor. Since I was close to home, I called mamabear to bring me the set of new control arms and my tools.. While waiting I jacked it up and HOLY COW!!!! Freaking Spindle Nut fell on the ground!! Put it all back together torqued and punched the spindle nut and went to NAPA and bought 2 new ones. A piece of advice.. When someone tells you to never reuse your old spindle nuts, the above is the exact reason why. Better safe than sorry, dieing in an accident because of a sub 5.00 part is STUPID!!! I will never use an old one again. EVER!!

Stake the front spindle nuts? Hmmm.

Guess I've forgotten to check the nail polish marks on mine lately. Maybe I'd better...

Glad to see you're okay, DJ!

Met a guy in a JY, who drove a metro, he was so proud of the fact that he re-used his axle nuts "all the time"!
I couldn't convince him that they were not designed to be reused!
I will reuse a set from another axle, if the punch section aligns far enough away from the original punch point.
Generally can't re-use the nuts from the same axles as the new punch point falls on top of the old one!
But never re-use more than once! They are usually pretty easily available!

Safety Guy, like the nail polish marking idea!

Packrat, let us know how the axle drilling goes.

Everyone, FMS has rear replacement spindles drilled for a cotter pin, to replace those without!
Of course those with a drill press can do there own!

                            freshtiva,

You need to eat more spinach and a daily vitamin will help too!
But I will admit that holding the festiva up with one hand while making sure you align the bit and engage the press with the other, is tricky!
