The bearings have to be preloaded to between 2 an 11 inch pounds of force to turn them when oiled with motor oil preloading involves using different thickness' of shims til proper preload is achieved. Not for the faint of heart.it runs so sweet

Sounds like you have a third rate mechanic. Any shop worth it's salt should have Alldata to explain such procedures. Next time the bearings go out, take it to a Ford/Mazda dealer and have them do it, and make the original shop pay for it. I'd say they owe you that much after two unsuccessful repairs.Axlander9289, brother of ThisVelologist

The best advice I can give you is to repack your bearings (yourself) every 75k miles and they will last for.... well mine have lasted 500k miles so far~Jeff

wow, i know all about the shims and such for doing the bearings, but 1) i don't have the shims, and 2) i learned the old-school way and do the front bearings by hand while reusing the old shim. it's always worked for me and i've NEVER had a problem.Trees aren't kind to me...

place the knuckle in the press upside down and push out the hub, the outer bearing will stay connected. chissle that off. the inner bearing seal can be reused if you're careful. pull that off and the inner bearing will fall out. the races need to be either pressed out or wacked out w/ a punch. SAVE THE RING!!! clean everything!! place the new outer bearing on the hub followed by the race and then the ring. then add the inner race and bearing. MAKE SURE YOU PACK THEM FIRST. flip over the knuckle and apply some thin lubricant to the inner surface (WD-40 or the like) then carefuly press the assembly back into place untill it all seats and STOP!!! replace the bearing seal (new or used) and check for tightness. the hub should move freely, but with some effort (like the kind of effort you use to turn a front wheel while it's off the ground). if it's looser than that, squeeze it with the press some more (tiny increments), if it's too tight, flip the knuckle and make like you're going to press off the hub again, but don't. just push on it till you see the slightest of movement at the hub and test again. you're going for a feel that takes a while to learn/master, so be patient.Trees aren't kind to me...
