Gas gauge?

I just bought a 1988 L, and when I got it I asked the guy how much gas was in it. He said a quarter tank, so i looked and thats what it said. On the way home i thought what the hell i will put some more gas in it, so i put about 15 dollars worth of gas in, 5 or 6 gallons i guess, but the needle didnt move. What might be my problem? Could it be the gauge itself or something in the tank?

the sending unit in the tank might be bad. Flip the back seat forward and pull up the carpet and you'll find the access cover
