how on earth do you squeeze the two bushings in where the stabilizer bar goes thru the arm? I tried for 2 hours to squeeze it all together and get the washer and nut on, but i cant get it on

Not sure why it wouldn't go?? I just replaced a set a while back, and they went together very easily. Did you try putting a little oil on them? Might help. Did you put new ones on or just putting it back together with old ones? If new, maybe they gave you the wrong part? If you're using old ones, maybe get some new ones.

Put those on 1st and then attach the arm to the frame.

There might be a few other threads on this topic. Typical for a rusty Festiva and a pain to fix.
