Broken valve cover bolt.... :(

    Broken valve cover bolt.... :(

    So I knew I had to replace my valve cover gasket... oil has been shooting out for the past few weeks...

    Upon taking the valve cover off, I found the problem. One of the bolts that holds the valve cover on was broken off into the block. Only a little bit is sticking out (not enough for vise grips)...

    How do I get this out so I can finally put her back together and (hopefully) oil leak free?

    Is there room to drill a small hole and use a easy out .

    Just make sure you lay down pleanty of rags in the valve train area .

    Have you tried taking a small punch and hammer and tapping it around ,as if you were unscrewing it , I have had luck in the past with that .

        Where do I get an easy out... thats what seems to work for most on the research I just did..

          I would try the punch.. but the bolt seems to be quite soft... it's deteriorating away with each method I try

            You can buy an easy out set at just about any parts store , and it will give you several different sizes to chose from , and should tell you what drill size to use with each one of them .

            when the hole is drilled you tap the easy out in the hole , and as you back it out it will dig in and grab it and it should back out .

            Spray it with some PB blaster before you do all that , it may help it break loose .

              With a tap & Die you can just get a tap the same size as the previous hole and basically drill through the broken bolt. Or you could try punching an X into the top of the broken bolt and using a phillips (or even slotted) screwdriver to bring it out enough to use pliers on.

                Left handed drill bits work nice too. the bolt will often back out when drilling it.

                    Stick with the ez out idea. It's the safest bet.

                      You don't give your location. I priced the easy outs in Ottawa before buying one and found the best price at RONA, a discount home improvement chain similar to Home Depot.

                        If there is a bit sticking up (and you can get to it), try cutting a screwdriver slot with a dremel tool.
