Anyone tried rebuilding their starter motor with success? In particular replacing the heavy woven cable between the solenoid and the starter. Why wasn't this covered at the factory??? When mine failed the cable was the consitancy of steel wool, and I'm assuming this is the problem. I'm thinking a car audio place might have the appropriate guage cable to replace it. And if I can disassemble it well enough I'll clean up the soleniod contacts and the starter commutator and see what happens.

It's most probably the brushes inside the starter. I took one apart once and swaped casings and internals from two different starters not hard at all.---------------------------------------------------

If brushes aren't readily available, you're better off getting a new one if you can get it for a reasonable price. Starters and alternators are so cheap these days, hardly anyone rebuilds them.Axlander9289, brother of ThisVelologist

Thanks, carbon. You're right Axl, I usually find a way to make things difficult for myself.
Those that did take one apart, how did you get the end cap off? Mine seems to have a really tight fit, or maybe I'm missing something? Do the indentations on the side of the housing have to be drilled out?4-spd 1989 Festiva - carburated baby!

You can but a refurbished one of ebay for 25.99
Yeah its a tight fit. What i would do is take a hammer and tap them with a bit of corisponding size or take a small pair of vice grips to them. The indensions do not have to be drilled out. And then tap the whole casing with a hammer a few times and work it off.---------------------------------------------------
