  • Speed-o-meter quit working

    Well last week on my way home from work my speedometer quit working.
    Today I started trouble shooting to see where the problem was.
    My 1st thought was that it may be the chain (please be the chain, I can fix that easy). but the chain is intact, I pulled it out of the sleeve and it looks fine.
    When I pull the cable and gear out of the trans, you can turn the gear and the speedometer works, so it looks like the problem is in the transmission.
    And yes, there is plenty of fluid in the 4 speed trans.

    Has anyone else ever had this happen?

    So now my speedometer is stuck on 504,477 miles.

    chain = cable ??

    Not certain how the gear on the spedocable is driven by the tranny.
    But easier/cheaper to swap a 5 speed in than to crack the tranny case to fix!

        probably the speedometer drive gear in the transmission has stripped, it's plastic. i've had it happen to me. the dealers don't have it available anymore. try posting in the " wanted" section. of course it might be time to get the 5 speed-get even better mileage.

          At 504,447 miles I hope that poor old cable rests in peace.
