Rear defroster inop.

I have checked the grounds ..good

I have 12.5 volts to the grid .

The grid is grounded to the hatch .

I checked continuity all the way across ..good

I checked each grid individually ..good

I made sure the contacts were clean on both side also ...good

I took my tester and touched both power and ground on both sides of the grid and is is powered , reading 12.5 volts .

The switch lights and the light comes on the dash .

It will not get hot at all ??

I used my laser temp check , it never raised 1 degree ??

Not sure on amps supply , I put everything away when It got dark .

Keep in mind this car did not come factory with this option , but I did install a GL hatch , and installed a factory switch ..using all the factory wiring that was supplied from the factory that was already in the car , so it should be getting the correct amount of juice from up front ?? :lol:

I know I have voltage there , maybe too much , so maybe a short on the ground side ?

Just really weird having it all there and no heat , maybe I missed something when I hooked it up in Colorado :lol: :lol:

I will check that voltage 1/2 way across tomorrow and make notes ...Thanks

Well today I have no continuity ??

I have no resistance ?

I am thinking the grid has deteriorated just enough to not be able to carry any voltage .
The wire still has voltage at the plug and still shows the grid is powered as I move my probe down around the edge , when I get 6-8 inches away from the plug I lose voltage all together , it is like the copper just cannot carry it ?

I guess I will need a new heated glass .

BUT ... I did get a new passenger axle installed today , I noticed that one of the boots was split this past weekend .

You might just have a weak link that can be repaired.

It is just not 1 , it would still work if it was 1 .

the grid looks discolored , from the outside of the glass , I tested it all over , each line and the power only is at the edge .. the big fat border line , then 6 inches away from the plug in , I lose all voltage

I remember seeing this in the manual. Ive never tried it but always wondered if it would work




I don't know if the repair kit or a generic substitute is available ??

I will look into that repair kit .

It all looks so solid and no breaks in the lines ,. Kinda baffling :lol:

I have actually installed a kit in a Jeep I used to own , that never had one .
