Underneath the Festiva there is a shift linkage that goes into the transmission. It is covered by the black ribbed boot. How do I remove the linkage out of the transmission to replace the seal behind it?

This is not covered in the Haynes manual. I'm starting to wonder what is covered in that manual. Anyways.... I really need to know how this part comes loose guys. -
the Haynes manual is nearly useless.... The trans needs to come apart to remove the shift-shaft. It's retained by a rollpin on the inside.Jim DeAngelis

that linkage has a fork on the other end that moves sliding clutches that engage different gears IE as said it gets pulled into the trans to get it out

i think you're referring to the shifter control rod boot. you have to take the tranny apart to get hold of the fork. there's a little pin there in the tranny case that serves as a lock. rollpin as what fb said. might as well clean the tranny internals of gunk and replace the oil seal there.Comment
