Smoking like a diesel.

A while ago, I replaced all my valve seals to deal with an oil burning problem, but I still have a bit of a cloud following me around. Does anyone have any insight on this? Are B6 engines prone to having the piston rings seize up and allow oil past?

When I had the head off recently, I checked the bores. While a bit shiny, they still showed some crosshatching, and there was almost zero ridge.

So, whaddya figure? Time for a new bottom end?

Sounds like rings to me, provided you replaced the valve seals correctly.

What are the compresssion numbers?

Compression numbers? Getting those would require dilligence, and actually pulling my pressure testing gauge thingy out of the drawer. I'll get that done this week maybe, if there's space in the garage, and if I find the time. (whiney today, aren't I?)

Did you check the "pressure testing guage thingy" (that made perfect sense to me, by the way)? Did you get a reading on the compression? Mine (when running) smokes like hippie at Woodstock when I downshift...lucky hippies.

Haven't had a chance. My friend's garage (the one I use to work on my cars since I live in a freakin' condo) has been tied up for weeks. He's been replacing the quarter panel on a 92 Explorer, and not a lot of progress is being made, seeing as he only works on it for about 1/2 hour per day.

Doubt you'd need a garage to check compression. Just remove spark plugs, insert compression guage, and use starter motor to cank engine. I find a remote switch helps but used to tie the guage to a stick and peek at it from driver's seat through slot between hood and body. Manual says to make sure battery has lots of juice in it. Don't forget to do dry, then wet test. BTW what colour is the smoke? White means one thing, black another. I'd have to look that up.

What kind of juice? Apple, grape, cranberry?

White smoke = water/coolant
Blue/Gray smoke = oil
Black smoke = overfueled/extremely rich

And when checking compression, make sure the throttle is blocked wide open. That's very important. Also, unplug the coil primary wires (12v wires) and unplug the injector harness, or pull the fuse for the PCM.
