  • Is this piece necessary?

Is the heat shield on the exhaust manifold super necessary? I've been working on my car and 3 of the 4 bolts that hold it on broke off :x

          Ahh haaaaa ha!

          Mine fell of years ago!

Take it off before it falls off and takes your O2 wire with it!
You'll need to reroute your O2 wire so the exhaust manifold won't burn the wire!

my heat sheild was gone on the B3, on the B6 i didn't have one and didn't install one.

On the B3 the O2 wire was laying up against the manifold all the time, never did it any harm.

I notice yours is an 88, is it carbed? If so and you live in a really cold environment you will find that you have better cold start drivability with it installed with the ducting installed to the air cleaner snout. The piece acts as a funnel for the warm air helping your car warm up quicker.

it also keeps the carb from icing up on cold starts if you live in an area that carbed cars are prone to it.
