  • Ford aspire help

Hi, I have a 95 ford aspire and put a used 95 engine in it all back together.
Went to start it wont' start, we put some starting fluid in the engine and it fired up and idled for a while could it be it isn't getting fuel?
When started up it the belt that drives the alternator squels (sp) and the belt caught fire for a couple seconds, could it be it is to tight?
    thanks.

Okay, let me address your 2 questions separately. First the belt, if you grab the belt centered between the pulleys it should have about 3/4-1" of +/- movement from it's neutral position. Second the starting issue, does it only fire up when you shoot starter fluid in the intake? If so then you are certainly having a fuel problem. Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel rail and put it in a bucket and have someone try to start the car (it won't start b/c the fuel line is off) you are looking for fuel to come out the line. If you get fuel then make sure your injectors are correctly connected. If everything is good up to here, then reconnect your fuel line and remove the fuel rail and injectors and put it in a bucket and have someone try to start it again. The injectors should pulse spraying fuel. If you get nothing then check the wiring to the injectors and ohm out the injectors. If you get fuel then you got me, I am not sure of the problem, but it wouldn't hurt to check timing. Hope this helps, let us know what it is!

Hi, I just tested the fuel pump with the bucket method and it works, Yes it will only start when you put starting fluid or gas in the intake.
I am going to replace the fuel pump and see if that fixes it, I got the engine from north end wrecking in dubuque IA and it had been sitting in there lot for 4 years so could be the fuel in the rail turned to varnish.
I will check the belt for play in it.
      thanks.

Depending on how long it sat the injectors could be plugged. This place will clean them http://www.witchhunter.com/index.php4

          Why????
Its getting fuel up to the rail at least!
Changing the fuel pump isn't going to clear your rail or your injectors!

But if you do, send me your old pump, as it is just fine.
No use wasting a good pump.

Need to clean you rail and injectors!
Or maybe buy new injectors or swap with a known good used set.

If the your 95 aspire is like my 92 L, you cann't pull the air intake duct at the throttle and expect the car to run. Reason, the fuel pump circuit is latched on by a switch in the air box (above the air filter). I think in the aspire, the ECU uses a minimum mas air flow input tos sustain the circuit. There is a test connection jumper that can be installed to force the fuel pump on as long as the key is turned.
For the belt, remove the belt(s) and make sure every thing atached freely turns...A/C...P/S...Water Pump....Alternator.

no, the Aspire does not function like the Festies. Aspire uses a Mass Air Flow sensor, the Festy uses a Vane Air Flow meter. VAF has a door pushed by airflow, the MAF uses resistor wires to determine the density of the incomming airflow. The VAF contains a fuel interupt switch, triggered by door movement. The MAF system PCM (Powertrrain Control Module) triggers the pump for 2 seconds at key-on, and anytime there is a tach signal (cranking, running). The Aspire has the typical Mazda MECS connector underhood, one pin of which is the fuel pump test pin. However, I agree with the above consensus, if you have flow at key on, then the pump is functional, as does not need to be replaced. If the engine cam from a boneyard, I would most likely suspect clogged injectors as well...

Hi, but the injectors in from the old engine and it fired right up, and fixed the belt problem, it revs high when first started then it will want to die but if you push on the gas pedal it will stay running any thoughts?
                thanks

check for vacuum leaks. A vacuum leak will cause the engine to want to die. Also make sure your timing is correct. Did you get to hear the new motor run before you put it in?

No, we ordered it from the salvage yard and they delivered it and we put it in, I'm fairly sure the timing is correct because we did it the way it showed in the service manual.
                    thanks

sounds like the iac valve is sticking prolly from siting up,diconnect the MAF,remove air intake tube to throttle body and spray cleaner(ford part # PM-2) while reving motor up and down and see if that helps. You can remove it and clean it with the same cleaner make sure there is no sludge/carbon and that the plunger moves freely.

Hi, we found that the top part of the intake manifold had a leak where the two parts meet so we took it off and replaced gasket and are going to try again.
