not necessarily. In 88-89, the LX and L Plus models got a 5speed and a tach cluster, which did not have an upshift lamp, so the top gear switch wasn't necessary. The 89 carbed L model was the last to have a 4speed. I did a 5spd swap on my 88 L, and all I did was leave the top gear switch diconnected and take out the "Shift" lamp bulb (I hated it anyway), till I swapped in a tach cluster. Doesn't affect the driveability of the car one bit.

ok, Backup Lamp switch circuit has two wires, Black/Yellow and Red/Yellow

Neutral switch circuit; Blue/White and Black

Top Gear switch circuit; Blue/Orange and Black
just leave this connector hang loose.

            cool, good to know!

i'll just continue in this thread with what is going on...

i got it all buttoned up last night/this morning (lol). was actually quite easy putting everything back together.
i cut that little 'tab' off the front of the engine cross member, the one that makes it a PITA to reinstall it if the swaybar is still bolted in place. slid right in after that. i just didnt want to unbolt that swaybar and risk breaking any bolts or anything.
my battery is shot, still need to get a new one but i did jump it off my Z. she started/idled and all that great.
but it started dumping fuel out from around the fuel regulator area (thats what it looks like anyway, an FPR). this was one the drivers side of the carb..
i'm new to carbs and how the fuel system works, so any ideas on where to start looking for the cause?

i havent driven it yet to see how the new trans is going to act because of the fuel issue. but nothing odd to report on it so far.

dry rotted main fuel line into the regulator. temp fix, cut off the end that 90's and remove the line from clips to get enuf slack to reconnect it. fixed.
bad exhaust leak at the cat now LOL. more to come.
